While working within the STPGA Professional Tournament Department, employees will work with a wide range of tournaments from 1-Day Section Events, 1-Day Senior Series Events, 1-Day “fun” Section Team Events, Section Major Championships, the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open, Korn Ferry Tour Q-School, and PGA TOUR Qualifying (Texas Children’s Houston Open & Valero Texas Open).

This position would be involved in executing and consolidating an Annual Tournament Budget of $2.6M across all Professional events  This position will be a great opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their career in golf operations and tournament management.  This role is intended to be a springboard for an individual working towards becoming a Director of Tournament Operations, Assistant Executive Director, or PGA TOUR Rules Official.

JOB OVERVIEWThis Tournament Manager will be reporting directly to our Director of Tournament Operations and round out our Professional Tournament Department with two (2) full-time staff members. This position will work alongside our Director of Tournament Operations to put on the best Professional Tournaments possible for our PGA Members, Associates, Seniors, and other Professionals.  The STPGA is proud of our tournament offerings and this position will be involved with the following schedule when it comes to number of tournament days, travel days, and overnights. This position should expect to spend much of their time on-site at events. The following is a high-level breakdown of our schedule in 2024 and the different types of days involved to administer a first-class experience for our members. 
  • Approximately 60 tournament days at approximately 50 different events.
  • Approximately 15 in-town setup days and 20 out of town setup days, not including paint days. In-town set-up days include events run in Houston where our office is located.
  • Approximately 30 travel nights within the Southern Texas region.
 This position will feature a variety of responsibilities including, tournament advances, execution of tournament infrastructure setup, course marking, course setup, cooler placement and filling, intern training and leadership, and trailer, warehouse, and equipment management. This position will also help the overall department with scheduling, marketing of our events, pre-event communication with the facility and players, recruitment of volunteers and staff, and onsite administration. This position will be the main point of contact for the Senior Series and Playing Ability Test programs along with other events as assigned in partnership with the Director of Tournament Operations.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?The STPGA is looking for a candidate who brings with them a proactive and forward-thinking mindset, has a passion for tournament operations and a desire to elevate their career. In addition, we are looking for someone who has a service mindset with a passion for serving PGA of America Members and Associates and has a willingness to do the small and mundane tasks that are required for the success of the team and overall organization. This position requires a bachelor's degree and someone with experience in golf tournament administration and operation.  PGA of America Members and Associates are welcome to apply but not required and having experienced a USGA / PGA Rules of Golf Workshop is a benefit or other Rules of Golf training.
WHAT DOES THIS POSITION LOOK LIKE?
Advance OfficialAdvance Official duties vary event to event, but would include facility coordination for golf, food and beverage offerings, starting time parameters, golf course maintenance conditions and practices, setting schedules of events, tracking registrations through the BlueGolf Tournament Software, administering site visits, setting infrastructure plans, coordinating signage, trophy, and tee gift orders, financial tracking and consolidation, purse development and consolidation, and more Program OversightThis position would be responsible for spearheading our Senior Series and Playing Ability Test Programs. This include scheduling events, working with facilities ahead of time via email communications and site visits, coordinating with the PGA of America for the PAT Program, being on-site and executing events, and financial budgeting, tracking, and reconciliation. Golf Course Setup In concert with the Director of Tournament Operations, this position would plan and execute golf course marking prior to the event. The day prior to an event you would be responsible for setting up tournament infrastructure, including but not limited to, tents, flying banners, signage systems, stake and rope, and more depending on the type of event.  The position would also be responsible for selecting Hole Locations for the event rounds and entering them into the StrackaLine system. Tournament DaysWhile on-site at tournaments, this will be a culmination of all the administrative duties accomplished and preplanning This position will lead the intern team, train volunteer rules officials, set up the golf course, monitor and enforce pace of play, fill snack baskets and coolers, assist with trash, print paperwork between rounds, and much more Tournament days are long days, but rewarding to see it all come together Equipment ManagementThis position would be responsible for maintaining all Section tournament equipment, including the vehicles, trailer, and warehouse. This involves ordering new equipment, performing repairs on existing equipment, and outsourcing work that cannot be completed in-house. It is critical to the success of our organization that all equipment is in good working order and all areas remain clean to promote the longevity of the equipment.
CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES
This candidate should display a strong moral character and unquestionable integrity. He or she should show professionalism in all forms, excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills, and a detail orientated mindset  Knowledge of BlueGolf tournament software would be preferred, computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and knowledge of the Rules of Golf.  This individual would need to have the ability to work weekends and some holidays and possess the ability to lift fifty (50) pounds and work outside in hot conditions. This position will also need to be able to drive a truck with a trailer.  COMPENSATION AND BENEFIT PACKAGEOur total package for this individual will range between $45,000 and $65,000 based on experience and other factors. At the STPGA, some of our high-level benefits include items like Unlimited PTO, 100% coverage of medical, dental, and long-term disability after 3 months of employment, and a 401K plan after one year of employment with up to 5% matching contribution from the STPGA. In addition to our PTO policy, the STPGA office is closed between the Christmas and New Years Holiday each year.  STPGA Staff Members also have free access at Willow Creek Golf Club and Windrose Golf Club to enjoy the great game of golf. We provide a cell phone and computer to all employees and plenty of golf shirts to last for a lifetime When traveling for work, the STPGA provides work trucks for your travels and a company credit card for work-related expenses. Our goal is to find the right person for the job and will communicate with each candidate in a timely manner after he or she applies on a potential interview or next steps.
