Job Description:

Job Summary: The Registered Nurse I PRN assesses, plans, directs, implements, and assists to provide quality patient care for assigned patients. This role is committed to working a minimum number of shifts per the RN PRN Workplan agreement.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:

  1. Delivers nursing care to assigned group of patients to include education directed towards identified knowledge deficits, treatment planning, pain management and discharge planning utilizing the nursing process.
  2. Delivers quality nursing care while minimizing the risk of infection, contamination, harm, or injury. Maintains safe and clean working environment ensuring compliance with procedure rules and regulations.
  3. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team to optimize numbers of breastfeeding and breast milk feeding infants.
  4. Develops and implements standards of care, policies and procedures for breastfeeding/breast milk management.
  5. Assesses infant’s readiness to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding.
  6. Documents teaching and consultation and response in the medical record. Reports findings to appropriate staff.
  7. Provides education to parents who are interested in breastfeeding/breast milk feeding. May include: bedside consultation, classes, reading materials, or other methods identified as needed.
  8. Participates in discharge teaching related to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding.
  9. Provides telephone counseling to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding mothers in the community.
  10. Provides education for prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding mothers and assists with the education of Network employees on the subject of lactation support.
  11. Serves as a resource person for physicians, CNMs, NP, PAs, nurses and other healthcare providers in order to promote optimal care.
  12. Provides and coordinates patient care, educates patients and public about various health conditions, and provides advice and emotional support to patients and family members.
  13. Maintains accurate, detailed reports and records and directs care with regard to age and developmental stage, presenting complaint, and pertinent history.
  14. Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses. Monitors, records and reports symptoms and changes in patients' conditions.

Qualifications:


Required Qualifications:

  • Nursing Diploma from an Accredited Diploma Program or Associate or higher Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • 6 plus months of experience as a practicing Registered Nurse.
  • 1 plus year of recent experience providing professional breastfeeding support and/or human lactation education.
  • Current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or proof of reciprocity of licensure between the State of Texas and another state.
  • Must register for, test, and achieve within 12 months of hire, the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Completion of unit specific competency based orientation program within 90 days.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors or higher Degree from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • 2 years of experience as a practicing Registered Nurse
  • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
