Summary

This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the at VA Boise Health Care System - Twin Falls VA Clinic in Twin Falls, ID. The Medical Technician performs a variety of functions, including accession specimens into computer system; collects, evaluates, and processes patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructs and assists patients; and sends out specimens for testing.



Duties

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Collecting and processing specimens obtained for analyses throughout P&LMS and associated reference laboratories
  • Making independent judgement and decision as to how many of each type of tube to use with each test ordered
  • Making gross visual observations and identifying subtle changes regarding the patient's condition, notifying appropriate emergency personnel as needed
  • Performing work related to tests and examinations using the techniques of medical laboratory practice in one or more specialized areas
  • Operating centrifuges, reporting any malfunction to supervisor, as needed, and evaluating temperature requirements of refrigerators on the wards as needed
  • Receiving and sorting specimens collected from inpatients, outpatients, and all CBOC's, checking request slips for proper information, logs in specimen, and delivering specimens to various laboratory sections
  • Receiving accessioning and processing of laboratory specimens from the main draw room, emergency department (ED), ward collect specimens, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) and Home Base Health Care (HBHC) patient draws
  • Observing and processing employee drug screen testing, which includes observation of urine collection while maintaining the integrity of the collection process, ensuring the privacy of the donor, ensuring the security of the specimen with the highest degree of courtesy and professional behavior
  • Entering pathology biopsy specimens form hospital and clinics, into the laboratory computer reporting system, preparing specimen cassettes, and preparing bar code labels for specimens
  • Monitoring and maintaining all centrifuges and serofuges in the service, which incudes cleaning the interior and exterior of each device in accordance with standard infection control policies and documenting the completion of the task on the log sheet
  • Processing send out specimens and storing specimens according to specimen storage requirements (i.e., ambient, frozen, or refrigerated)
  • Maintaining clean workspace and continuously monitoring area for contamination
  • Troubleshooting issues on the automated instrument and working independently to be assigned to operate the automated instrument
  • Conducting for new laboratory medical technicians, new medical laboratory technologists (MT)/chemistry staff and medical technologist students on how to operate and trouble-shoot the chemistry automated processing instrument
Work Schedule: Monday to Thursday: 07:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m. & Friday: 07:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
