Duties

DUTIES
The Mental Health Nursing Assistant is a member of the Mental Health nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in the care of Veterans. The incumbent functions as a champion and advocate for the provision of recovery focused services to Veterans. As such, the incumbent is expected to model recovery and its defined values is all aspects of her or his professional activities and partnerships. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain a safe physical environment
  • Providing 1:1 care as a Patient Safety Attendant
  • Recognizing potentially hazardous conditions on the unit and reporting them to the Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Taking and charting vital signs, height and weight.
  • Completing complex nursing procedures including bathing, hygiene, grooming, dressing, toileting, caring for patients with supplemental oxygen therapy and assisting the Psychiatric Provider or RN with physical examinations and procedures.
  • Engaging the patients behaviors and improving their comfort.
  • Observing and documenting disturbed behaviors and working with the interdisciplinary team on managing patients behaviors and improving resident comfort.
  • Charting veterans' physical and emotional responses and progress, describing subtle behavioral changes and interactions with others, reporting and recording care.
  • Maintaining competency in and appropriate use of Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) techniques.
  • Assist with the care of Veterans in other areas of Mental health Services and within the facility when needed.
Work Schedule: Full-time 12 hour tours, varied shifts.
