Summary

The Audiologist conducts a full range of audiological evaluations to determine the type and degree of hearing loss, determines Veterans' need for amplification, predicts and measures the effectiveness of amplification, and determines need for and type of rehabilitation and counseling of Veterans with hearing loss and their families. This position is assigned to all sites of care within VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the identification, evaluation, rehabilitation and proper referral of Veterans having organically based and non-organically based hearing disorders.
  • Seeing Veterans from a variety of referral sources.
  • Selection of reliable and valid clinical tests and instruments in order to identify Veterans with hearing loss as well as determining site of lesion within the auditory system.
  • Maintaining close liaison with other medical, allied health and administrative services at the medical center in order to contribute to the total rehabilitation of the Veteran.
  • Identification, evaluation and referral of Veterans to an aural rehabilitation program.
  • Providing accurate data, on a timely basis, for reports, which are transmitted to Central Office management, Medical Center management, or other destinations.
  • Current relevant professional literature is reviewed in order to incorporate new ideas and research findings into the program so that Veterans will be provided with increasingly better care.
  • Participates in the training of graduate level audiology and speech pathology trainees, medical students, resident physicians, as well as members of other professional disciplines on normal communication and communication disorders.
  • Conducts and participates in individual and cooperative research projects on normal and disordered communication.
  • Follows prescribed safety procedures, using appropriate lifting methods and body mechanisms for heavy lifting or moving of heavy objects.
