The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.
The purpose of the Furnishings Department is to build and repair furniture and install carpet and draperies in the House offices. Within the Furnishings Department, the Upholstery Shop is responsible for upholstery of standard and unique/antique existing furniture, upholstery of new furniture, cleaning, and repair. This position serves as the Journeyman Upholsterer. Key responsibilities include supporting the daily operations of the L&S/Furnishings Upholstery Shop, including, but not limited to: Cutting and sewing upholstery covers, upholstering and cleaning/conditioning furniture, service calls, shop upkeep.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities
Ability to use different commercial sewing machines with minimal assistance. Ability to cut and sew complicated fabric and leather covers with minimal assistance. Ability to safely and accurately use an electronic foam cutter to make foam cushions for furniture.Ability to accurately read measuring devices to include rulers and tape measures; basic math skills.Ability to perform shop upkeep. Skills and knowledge necessary to upholster furniture, including removing covers and padding, tying springs, building from the frame up, and applying final cover. Ability to apply upholstery techniques to perform all upholstery related tasks, including the operation and maintenance of sewing machines and other equipment used within the upholstery trade with little or no assistance.Knowledge and skillset to properly remove covers and paddings from furniture, as well as knowledge of different types of foams and their applications. Ability to build up furniture from a bare frame to completion with minimal assistance, including 8-way hand-tied springs and hand-stitched cake seats. Ensure assignments are completed within the service level agreement as set forth by L&S/Furnishings and House regulations. Communicate effectively to ascertain customer's selection and specifications for a specific job and limit amount of waste. Tear down, cut and sew, and upholster House owned furniture in timely manner and meeting quality standards. Applies appropriate skills, methods, and tools to complete accurate assignments with minimal re-work required to produce the final product. Demonstrates efficient use of time to complete work assignments. Is present in shop and ready to work at 5:30 am. Ensures that project plans are followed and executed effectively. Promote environment of coaching, teamwork, creative thinking and support, encouraging and assisting employees to reach their full potential.Consistently adheres to policies and procedures to include wearing applicable personal protective equipment and maintains a safe working environment for coworkers.Performs other official duties as assigned.

Qualifications
6 years of experience cutting and sewing upholsteryHigh school diploma or equivalentExperienced in material patterning, cutting and sewing for upholstery. Able to cut and sew upholstery covers for variety of stock and unique furniture. Has experience in performing tasks involving precision fabrication, repair and cleaning of furniture.
