Our client is a leading commercial construction company with an extensive customer base and is extremely successful and prides itself on their history and expertise in the market.

 

The Chief Estimator is a primary member of the estimating team who has overall responsibility for the creation and accuracy of budgets and estimates. The Chief Estimator is responsible for the oversight of the estimating process for project estimates and reports to the Director of Estimating.

 

The Chief Estimator will oversee analysis of past performance on projects and establish estimating standards for all future estimates based on such analysis and assist in oversight of the historical cost database and management of estimating software.

 

The Chief Estimator works closely with the Director of Estimating to oversee department standards for deliverables such as bid packages, deliverable formats, and budget tracking tools. The Chief Estimator must also be able to assume responsibility for leading preconstruction efforts

 

The Chief Estimator manages and coordinates the people, software and other resources used to perform the estimating functions. Projects range from fully defined Design (conventional “Bid-Build” Projects) to Conceptual/Design Development (construction management projects).

 

 

Duties: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Reviews project plans and specifications and coordinates with the team to confirm complete scopeAble to assume the lead role as a “Captain”Identify risk issues and their order of magnitudeSolicit subcontractor and/or supplier information & pricingAssist in “Good Faith Efforts” as requiredPrepares instructions to bidders, bid form and other bid solicitation information as requiredPerforms and/or manages the quantity survey and pricing effort for internal budgetsPrepares conceptual budgets based on minimal informationMust have the desire and passion to successfully procure workHave a basic understanding of M.E.P. Systems and PricingReviews general conditions, schedules, scopes of work, hoisting plans, site logistics and other exhibits as prepared by OperationsEnsures the flow of project information is maintained and documentedReviews and/or manages the review and scoping of specialty contractor bidsCoordinates technical proposal requirements with Marketing DepartmentReviews constructability issues and reports them to the Director of EstimatingMaintains and communicates data on construction and material cost trends affecting project costsAnalyze alternate means and methods to determine the most economic alternativeBuilds effective relationships with customers, design team, specialty contractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customer’s expectationsActively participates in industry, client and community relations to enhance company imagePerforms other related duties as neededAssist project personnel on successful proposals as follows:Participate in the transfer of information on successful projects including the Job Kick-off MeetingAssist in the preparation and review of work plans as requestedParticipate in periodic reviews and visits to projects as appropriatePricing of change impacts as required

Qualification: KNOWLEDGE, SKILL and ABILITIESBe proficient in all computer software programs used in estimating including Smoot Construction’s proprietary estimating systems – be willing and able to learnProcess strong mathematical and computer skills. Proficiency with all MS Office

products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)

Expertise in two or more areas of General Contracting (concrete, masonry, carpentry work, etc.)Ability to breakdown construction operations into a logical sequence of activitiesAbility to work in a team environmentAbility to professionally communicate the basis for individual work product when in a highly stressed environmentMust be a self-starterMust be able to meet deadlines and put in the time needed to get the job doneEffective oral and written communication skillsCandidates must possess a strong work ethicStrong organizational, interpersonal skillsGood attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies and problem solve

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCEBachelor's Degree Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent related work experienceProven success in procuring work through all forms of preconstruction servicesMinimum of 10 or more years hard-bid GC estimating, preconstruction, development estimating experience
