Job Summary:
This position identifies and treats children with speech, language, voice, or fluency disorders. This position works with teachers, administrators, parents, and students. The primary goal of this position is to facilitate the development of communication.

• Screens new students to the school division for speech or language disorders

• Observes classrooms, as requested, to provide suggestions for addressing speech or language disorders

• Evaluates students referred with speech or language concerns to determine the area of involvement and degree of severity

• Follows the timelines and completes the paperwork for determining students' eligibility for the Speech or Language Impairment program and the need for speech therapy as a related service

• Develops an appropriate Individualized Education Program for each student, and implements it according to state regulations

• Provides speech and language therapy according to the needs of the students, and the state guidelines

• Develops home programs and consults with parents, as necessary

• Consults with teachers regarding the Speech or Language Impairment program general information, as well as specific information on students on the caseload

• Works as part of an interdisciplinary team with students who have multiple disabilities; this could include consultation when the team is developing and implementing a feeding program, developing and training for the use of an augmentative or alternative communication system, and/or facilitating language in the classroom

• Presents professional development opportunities for school faculty, as warranted

• Attends county-sponsored professional development to provide a means of professional growth

• Provides a monthly count of the number of students on the caseload

• Maintains equipment and materials in good condition, and returns borrowed materials to the Office of Special Education, as requested, by the end of the school year

• Provides information to the Office of Special Education, as requested

• Adheres to state, federal, and local laws and regulations governing the education of students with disabilities
