The Physician Assistant will meet the VA expectations as a member of the medical staff adhering to current Southern Nevada Healthcare System Medical By-Laws, rules of the Medical Staff and practice under their approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. The Physician Assistant may also work off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. Provides on-call coverage (if applicable). They provide immediate, direct and on-site access for consultation, assessment, and mental health treatment as clinically indicated. Incumbent operates within a multidisciplinary team matrix, actively collaborates, and coordinates Veteran care with other clinical and administrative supporting services. Incumbent may also participate in interviews for positions in the Behavioral Health. The incumbent serves as a contact for other disciplines within VASNHS, providing clinical services and case management-based services as needed (directly or through referral) necessary to ensure Veteran care is coordinated within VASNHS, with community health or mental health providers, and with other agencies as needed.
The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform initial histories and physical examinations.
Lead and organize patient care independently.
Utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes.
Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients as well as episodic patients.
Screen outpatients to determine future care.
Consults with the Supervising Physician for more complex diagnostic or therapeutic problems.
Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice (including schedule 11-V controlled substances). Writing orders and prescriptions as necessary for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State law.
Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities.
Fully accountable for practice, including Veteran visits, measuring outcomes to interventions, and meeting productivity standards.
Responsible for identification of patient problems requiring consultation with other multi disciplinary medical center staff and making appropriate referrals.
Serves as a consultant, liaison, and point of contact for programs within Behavioral Health services, throughout the hospital, and within the community.
Participates in local, VISN, and national committees/community networking activities as requested by BHS or facility leadership.
