Job Introduction

It's an exciting time to be part of BBC News. We are continuing to expand in North America, our biggest market outside of the UK, and we are recruiting for experienced Broadcast News Engineers to play a critical role in our growth.

As part of a small and friendly shift-working team in our Washington DC Bureau you will be providing operational support, incident management and stakeholder communication for a range of BBC platforms and services including the BBC News Channel and our exciting and innovative digital services.

You must have broadcast experience in automation.

Job Responsibilities

You'll use a diverse range of broadcast and production monitoring tools to identify and resolve complex service impacting issues across a range of technologies and platforms. You'll initiate response to service disruption and support proactive measures aimed at preventing recurrence. You'll be responsible for logging of incidents accurately including technical response and action taken as well as implementing contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events. You'll need to keep informed of operational changes ensuring that actions are taken in line with best practice and ensure the Health and Safety at Work and other workplace legislation is observed. You'll be responsible for ensuring risk assessments are completed, appropriate and meet BBC standards as well as ensuring appropriate method statements are reviewed and fit for purpose.

Key functions for the Washington location include:
  • Desktop IT support and installation (hardware & software for both PC and MAC)
  • User login account support & troubleshooting
  • Office network infrastructure installation and maintenance (LAN & Wireless)
  • Editing support & edit suite maintenance (software and hardware)
  • Installing/ wiring and maintaining servers and other rack mount gear
  • Printer installation and maintenance
  • Mikrotik router experience a plus
  • Troubleshoot, install, maintain & repair broadcast equipment for TV & Radio.
  • Card-based security system management
  • Security camera system installation and maintenance
  • Electrical safety testing and inventory tracking of all equipment
  • Maintenance and repair record keeping


The BBC will be operating recorded and 7 day a week live programming from Washington DC. The hours of output may vary; however initially current hours of live output will be 1600 EST until 0000 EST. In this role you will be expected to carry out shift work (including weekends) to meet the needs of the BBC International Operations. You may be working as an individual during these transmission times or as part of a team.

Are you the Right Candidate?

Essential
  • Experience in newsroom production systems and control room automation for LIVE newscasts is essential.
  • Broad technical knowledge, including understanding of complex systems built from separate components.
  • Experience of operating within, or demonstrable knowledge of, multi-platform environments.
  • Experience or knowledge of monitoring and interacting with a range of applications and services.
  • Experience in supporting a wide range of broadcast and production technologies, systems and equipment.
  • Experience of logging and managing incidents in an operational environment.
  • Familiarity with using a range of diagnostic and monitoring tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external providers and internal partners.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing defects in complex systems.
  • Able to create supporting documentation.
  • Able to prioritise according to service impact and work under pressure.
  • Awareness of current safety legislation and statutory requirements relating to IT
  • Ability to share knowledge with team members.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards, approaches and processes and other relevant regulatory requirements.


Desirable
  • Problem solving methodologies.
  • Knowledge of ITIL support model.
  • Experience in media and creative environments.
  • Knowledge of best practice in IT security policies, standards and procedures.
