Primary Purpose Responsible for basic specimen processing and testing to assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients. Minimum Specifications Education - Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience - None Equivalent Education and/or Experience Certification/Registration/Licensure - Must be certified by one of the following below- OR- certification eligible with certification obtained within 6 months, from hire: Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) - National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) Medical Technologist (MT) - American Medical Technologist (AMT)-Medical Technologist (MT) - Department of Health Services (HHS) formally (HEW) Technologist, Blood Banking (BB) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist, Chemistry (C) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist, Hematology (H) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist, Microbiology (M) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Technologist, Molecular Biology (MB) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Required Tests for Placement Skills or Special Abilities - Must be able to follow all laboratory procedures. - Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of laboratory techniques. - Must be able to satisfactorily operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of laboratory equipment. - Must be able to identify and appropriately address problems adversely affecting test results. - Must be able to maintain accurate records, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively with various hospital personnel and medical staff. - Must be able to use laboratory and hospital computer systems appropriately to accomplish assigned work within three months of employment. Responsibilities 1. Responsible for receiving specimens, assessing specimen integrity, verifying labeling and documentation, and for data entry of orders to ensure that patients are appropriately billed. 2. Responsible for basic and complex specimen processing, reagent preparation, test performance and for reporting test results within the assigned area. 3. Performs all required quality control tasks to ensure validity of test results, and maintains documentation regarding quality control, calibrations, maintenance and handling of proficiency testing samples. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and performs troubleshooting procedures and documents corrective action. 4. Assists with the instruction and consultation of new employees, residents, medical technology students, physicians and other personnel in proper laboratory procedures. 5. Responsible for actively participating in the Pathology Quality Assurance program. 6. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals and mission of PHHS. May perform special projects, such as research and development or product evaluation, under the supervision of a Laboratory Section Supervisor. 7. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Pathology by attending seminars/workshops as required by PHHS and the Department of Pathology, and by reading professional journals and PHHS publications. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices. 8. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Pathology area. Follows internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding, and reports any unethical or fraudulent behavior.
