Are you passionate about advancing research and education in autism and autism spectrum disorders? The School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development at South Dakota State University is looking for a visionary faculty member whose expertise and leadership will elevate scholarly research and advance teaching efforts focused on autism and autism spectrum disorders. Desirable candidates should be able to assume leadership roles and/or accept key responsibilities including (a) engaging in cutting-edge research on autism, (b) providing high quality teacher preparation and graduate student training, and © facilitating autism training opportunities and programs. This position is supervised by the Director of the School of Education Counseling, and Human Development with an anticipated start date of August 22, 2025. Located on our main campus in Brookings, South Dakota, this 9-month, in-person, tenure-track, open rank faculty position is full-time and benefit-eligible.
The School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development creates a unique niche across programs in education and human science fields that emphasizes developmental sciences and the science of learning. By more fully integrating human development and education, we will be able to better ground teacher education in the context of developmental and cultural relevance, and we will further strengthen our offerings in human development by grounding them in the science of learning. Both areas underscore the importance of how learning across the lifespan develops in various lived experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To contribute to the SDSU strategic plan, “Pathway to Premier 2030”, the selected candidate must maintain an active research agenda, publication record, and pursue external funding in special education. They are expected to collaborate in further development of undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher education, and focus on neurodiversity, effective teaching, behavioral management, and assessment strategies to meet students’ individual needs.
The Lucas P. Wintrode Endowed Faculty of Special Education at SDSU will be an experienced and enthusiastic faculty leader who will:
Maintain a high-level of scholarly activity and/or research productivity through grant funding, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at national and/or international forums in alignment with the appropriate academic discipline.
Provide exceptional education through classroom instruction of upper-level special education and/or special education, including courses on autism and autism spectrum disorders, and/or supervise candidates in the field.
Guide and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in their work to support individuals with autism and on the autism spectrum.
Develop an annual plan outlining goals and propose a budget for use of endowed funds supporting the professorship and related activities. The plan shall be approved by the Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences.
Actively engage in professional organizations at the local, state, and national level.
Advocate/lobby with the South Dakota Department of Education regarding a potential Autism Endorsement for Educator Certificates.
SALARY RANGE:
The salary and rank for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $70,000 for Assistant Professor rank. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned doctoral degree (PhD or Ed.D) in Special Education or a related field completed by first day of employment.
Ability to communicate effectively with audiences who have various lived experiences.
Minimum of three years special education teaching experience in kindergarten-12th grade.
Scholarship and an educational background in the areas of autism and autism spectrum disorders
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Potential for excellent teaching in university settings (on-campus and online).
Ability to develop strong collaborative partnerships among institutions of higher education, local education agencies, government agencies, mental health, and nonprofit organizations where collaboration will enhance the strengths of the College and stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Record of developing and delivering academic programs in a university setting.
Ability to collaborate with community schools and other partners in support of student success.
Ability to advance academic programs through university and institutional review processes.
Expertise in integrating content areas in a cross-curricular approach to instruction.
