Department Summary:
Our main surgical populations include head & neck, cardiothoracic, breast, GI, GYN, urology, vascular and plastics.
There are opportunities to practice a wide variety of skills such as chest tube and other drain management, tube feedings, trach care, pain management with PCAs/epidurals, wound care, etc.
The unit is part of Duke Cancer Institute of Wake County, which provides comprehensive cancer treatment for patients in Wake County receiving care across the continuum of inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Work Hours & Shifts:
up to 96 hours per 8-week scheduleMajor holidays are assigned upon hire on a 3 year rotating schedule
Job Duties:
Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and actAssist in the development and implementation of general policies and responses.
Provide direction and guidance in the proper use, care and control of as assigned with physician orders and established policies and procedures to include collecting and analyzing patient data, developing and implementing nursing care plans, establishing interpersonal relationships with patients, evaluating nursing care given and communicating to proper personnel relevant facts about patients, action taken and patient as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit material resources; appraise quality and effectiveness of material and equipment and report results to head nurse; maintain standards of cleanliness in assigned areas.
Observe activities of nursing staff and make recommendations to nursing management for improvement in the quality and effectiveness of nursing care given procedures designed to effect efficiency of operations.

No experience required.CN Is are eligible for promotion to CN II by meeting criteria set forth by the DUHS Vizient Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire.
Promotions can occur at 12 months of hire, but no later than 18 months of hire.
Education, Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start dateNurses hired at Duke Health with a valid compact license are required to obtain their North Carolina nursing license within 90 days of their start date.
