Overview:  

We are seeking a research scientist who will focus on the development and implementation of microscopy methods for characterizing low temperature electrolyzer and fuel cell components, including catalysts, electrodes, membranes, porous transport layers, and bipolar plates.  This position resides in the Microscopy MicroÅnalysis (MMÅ) Group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section of the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As part of our research team, you will collaborate with world leaders in electrolysis and fuel cells through the Department of Energy’s consortia working in concert to overcome key barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as an energy carrier.  Your role will be to elucidate materials properties governing the performance, durability, and recyclability of membrane electrode assemblies using the advanced suite of electron microscopes at ORNL.  You will help drive ongoing efforts to implement automated spectroscopic and tomographic imaging routines enabling high throughput quantitative characterization which will help accelerate the development and adoption of clean-energy technologies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

-Conduct research using STEM, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy
-Optimize advanced methods for automated tomography and high throughput analysis
-Coordinate task efforts within a highly collaborative environment of national laboratory and industry partners
-Lead the reporting of research results through conferences and peer-reviewed journals
-Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
-Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

-PhD degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related discipline
-Experience with transmission electron microscopy
 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience with electrochemistry or electrochemical systems
-Experience with electron tomography
-Familiarity with coding for data analysis in languages such as Python, Matlab, etc.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
-Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
