Position: Medical Transcriptionist

Department: Pathology

Schedule: Per Diem

POSITION SUMMARY:

Type pathology reports and assist pathologists with all administrative duties associated with a pathology lab. Must be able to type 40 words per minute or more. Knowledge of medical terminology and good costumer service skills. File pathology slides and reports, accession surgical and consult cases.

Works in the pathology department reviewing and editing surgical pathology dictation drafts, prepared by speech recognition software. Ensuring that the transcription and grammar is correct, complete, and has a consistent style.

Type’s surgical pathology reports into the laboratory information system. Coordinates frozen section procedures between the operating room and the pathology department.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for surgical specimen accession, routinely check and monitor assignation of surgical specimen number, reviews and edit surgical pathology gross description, using dragon software.
  • Listen to the recorded dictation of a doctor or other healthcare professional
  • Transcribe and interpret the dictation into diagnostic test results, operative reports, referral letters, and other documents
  • Review and edit working drafts, prepared by speech recognition software, making sure that the transcription is complete, and has a consistent style
  • Translate medical abbreviations and jargon into the appropriate long form suitable for a pathology report
  • Identify inconsistencies, errors, and missing information within a report that could compromise patient care
  • Follow up with the healthcare provider to ensure the accuracy of the reports
  • Submit health records for physicians to approve
  • Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements
  • Enter medical reports into electronic health records systems
  • Perform quality improvement audits
  •   Maintains files and records according to standards set by JCAHO, CAP, OSHA and HCFA
  • Use Advanced Barcoding and tracking to track pathology specimens
  • Send out requested pathology material to other health care providers
  • Types or copies all reports, spreadsheets or other correspondence as requested
  • Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
  • Collect/compile/analyze statistical data on pathology reports, checks accuracy and turnaround time, submit the information for Medical Director review and presentation to the Quality Management Department.
  • Compiles information from various reports; input into computer, print and distribute to residents and pathology staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma with one-year certificate program or 2-year associate’s degree with coursework in anatomy, medical terminology, legal issues relating to healthcare documentation, and English grammar and punctuation

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Completed postsecondary training in medical transcription preferred

EXPERIENCE: :

  • One to two years’ experience as a medical transcriptionist.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Need a good understanding of the English language and grammar
  • Able to work under short deadlines.
  • Must be comfortable using computers and word-processing software and is able to type 40 to 50 words per minutes
