We are looking to hire a Senior Scientist, Materials and Process Technology immediately at our Technical Innovation Center in Hunt Valley, MD.

Depending on experience level of the candidate, the role may be offered as a Sr. Scientist or Principal Scientist. 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Scientist is responsible for supporting and managing complex technical projects with global outreach through all phases of product design and technology development to create superior products, intellectual property, and competitive advantage for McCormick. The scientist will plan and implement applied research in Materials Science, and support commercialization of new products, ingredients, and technologies. The scientist is expected to contribute to technical problem solving for customers, both internally and externally, to aid in new product innovation, technology development, scale-up, and analytical characterization. This Senior Scientist will also be responsible for data analysis and documentation of results, effective communication of these results to the technical community and management.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support research and development related to strategic technical projects employing proprietary technologies.
  • Identify/develop new ingredients, technologies, and methods to drive new product innovation.
  • Provide expertise and technical guidance in the areas of food science and technology to Product Development and Manufacturing/Supply Chain functions.
  • Support new product commercialization and problem solving in manufacturing.
  • Manage intellectual property for current projects.
  • Provide technical direction to junior level scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Effectively present ideas, strategies, and achievements to functional teams and senior management.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS or PhD in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Strong background and interest in food chemistry, ingredient functionality and food technology.
  • Experience in food or flavor industry in dry product formats (e.g., seasoning blends) 10 years or more.
  • Ability to manage complex projects.
  • Strong background in analytical methods and sensory science.
  • Working knowledge of statistics and experiment design.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with ingredient suppliers.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong background in food chemistry, food polymer science, emulsion technology, flavor encapsulation, analytical methods, starches, emulsifiers, and flavors.
  • Product/technology development experience.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals, patent applications, presentations.
  • Member of professional societies supporting food or flavor industry.
  • Experience with process scale-up from pilot to commercial scale manufacturing.
  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively across levels and functions.
