UPMC is hiring a full-time Phlebotomist to serve patients at multiple outpatient sites in the Harrisburg area. The hours for this role are Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM and every third Saturday 7:00 AM-11:00 AM. No holidays required
Purpose: The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing phlebotomy and specimen collection for outpatients, essential for diagnosis and treatment. May also handle computer, courier, and clerical tasks under the supervision of Medical Technologists.
Responsibilities:
Interact courteously with laboratory customers; respond to phone inquiries promptly.
Follow patient identification procedures to collect blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick; instruct patients on self-collection procedures.
Demonstrate reliability and independent judgment to prioritize department needs.
Collect and transport specimens from on- and off-site locations following safety protocols.
Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including quality control, safety, and compliance.
Perform clerical duties and use computer systems to enter demographic information, test orders, and manage patient data.
Train and orient new employees, students, and residents.
Report unusual incidents to technical staff, supervisors, or pathologists.
Perform arterial punctures following strict guidelines.
Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials cost-effectively.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred.
Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.
Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
