Job Summary

The Executive Director, Libraries will be the critical institutional partner to build alliances and champion the Libraries across the institution as this unit changes and adapts to the current operating environment. The Executive Director, a leader within the Division of Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs, will demonstrate, communicate, and promote the value of the Libraries’ resources and assets, as well as articulate the impact of the Libraries’ programs, services, and collections to advance the University’s multiple missions in support of our exemplary faculty, learners, and staff.

The Executive Director will lead the professional librarians and support staff through strategic, operational changes to re-envision and re-position the roles of the Libraries in alignment with the University’s and Division’s strategic plans. The Executive Director will develop innovative strategies to enhance the unit’s proactive positioning and optimization, elevating its visibility, influence, and value as a key institutional partner for knowledge curation, creation, and high-quality service delivery across the University’s academic, research, and clinical endeavors. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.

Job Duties

Provides leadership in establishing library services to meet the mission and strategic plan of UT Health San Antonio including education, research, clinical care, and community engagement, and leads library strategic and annual planning efforts; Manages the library’s personnel and operations budget of $1.2 M and collections budget of $2.8 M, carefully stewarding these critical resources to provide optimal content strategy for the library’s collections and to lead the delivery high-quality and effective programs and services that advance the university’s academic, research, and clinical missions; Partners with institutional leaders to support the academic, research, and clinical priorities of UT Health San Antonio, across the University’s six schools and broader enterprise; Represents UT Health San Antonio and the library in national, regional, and statewide library consortia and organizations; Manages, with the Library’s leadership team, the professional librarians, and staff, assuring that they perform their duties efficiently and effectively and in compliance with institutional policies and procedures. Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing work; appraising productivity and efficiency, handling complaints/grievances and disciplining when necessary; Collaborates with senior leaders in the Division of Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs to develop deliver, and assess the broad array of academic and student support services and programs that advance the success of our faculty and learners; Undertakes additional or special duties as assigned. 

Education

Master’s Degree in Library Science, or Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association. 

Experience

9 years of professional library experience, including a minimum of 5 years of increasing responsibility, to include demonstrable supervisory and staff development experience as well as operational and fiscal management.

Preferred:

Experience with administrative and/or managerial and supervisory responsibilities, in an academic library environment, and in particular, an academic health center environment preferred.
