Speech-language pathologists in the school setting help children with speech, language, or communication disorders navigate the learning environment and provide them with the tools they need to communicate their thoughts and ideas successfully.
Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Speech/Language Pathologist reports to the Executive Director of Inclusion and collaborates with Inclusion Managers, Inclusion Teachers, Related Service Providers, Dedicated Aides, and general education staff.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Providing evaluations and remediation of a variety of disorders and/or delays, including conducting informal and formal screenings of students who are possible candidates for special education referral.
Conducting triennial re-evaluations of students who receive speech and language therapy.
Participating in the development and implementation of IEPs and 504 plans for students who qualify for speech-language services.
Using knowledge of evidence-based best practices, designing and implementing therapeutic programs for individual students and groups of students based on IEP goals to promote inclusion of students in the general education classrooms.
Collaborating with general education teachers, inclusion teachers, and other related service providers to identify instructional strategies and accommodations/modifications that promote student success in all content areas.
Assisting students, families, and staff in understanding students' speech and language disorders so that all can advocate for and support students' achievement of their academic, behavioral, language, and social goals.
Referring families to outside organizations as appropriate.
Maintaining the Speech and Language evaluation materials, therapeutic equipment, and supplies.
Providing training and education to family/caregivers and other professionals.
Acting as a resource and supporting classroom teachers in the implementation of IEP goals, designing instructional supports by modifying/adapting curriculum.
Preparing quarterly individual student progress reports.
Communicating with families regarding service delivery and progress.
Encouraging families' involvement in students' therapy goals.
Documenting and reporting student progress toward achievement of annual goals by collecting and interpreting data.
Attending and participating in parent conferences and IEP meetings.
Participating in professional learning activities to advance knowledge of effective instructional curricula and methodologies for students with special needs.Performing related duties as requested.
Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in Speech-Language Therapy; District of Columbia Speech Therapy License Desired Qualities Demonstrated communication skills; Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member; Experience using the Special Education Data System (Special Programs); Specialized and differentiated methods of instruction for a wide variety of students and their needs; Evaluative strategies to assess the effective delivery of special education services and support.
3+ years of related experience preferred; Experience working with special needs students in an inclusive setting; Experience working with students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; Knowledge of state requirements for special education Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
