As a Staff Battery Engineer at WHOOP, you will play a key role in ensuring our battery systems' ongoing quality, reliability, and performance in the field. You will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, suppliers, and third-party testing labs to sustain our current generation of products, focusing on quality control, failure analysis, design updates, supplier qualification, regulatory compliance, and integrating learnings into advanced development projects.RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead quality control initiatives for current product lines, ensuring conformance to technical standards, safety regulations, and industry best practicesQualify and evaluate new suppliers to ensure they meet WHOOP’s quality, performance, safety, and regulatory standardsConduct field quality assessments and collaborate with field service teams to monitor and address battery-related issuesDevelop, audit, and document detailed test plans for battery systems and components, ensuring comprehensive coverage for field performance, durability, and safetyMaintain a deep understanding of relevant regulatory certifications and testing requirements (e.g., UL, CE, IEC) to ensure product complianceDevelop and execute verification, validation, and integration strategies for battery systems.Conduct and participate in system level reviews, DFMEA, and risk assessments, focusing on field reliability, battery performance and regulatory complianceManage the battery subsystem teamQUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, electrical engineering, systems engineering, or related field (Masters preferred)7+ years of experience in quality control, failure analysis, or sustaining engineering, particularly in battery-powered devices (experience in consumer electronics or wearables preferred)Strong understanding of Lithium Ion Cell design and battery chemistryStrong knowledge of regulatory certifications and testing requirements (e.g., UL, CE, IEC) for battery systems, and experience certifying products to these standardsExpertise in design verification, validation, and testing for battery systemsProficiency in writing technical reports and documenting field quality findings, supplier assessments, regulatory compliance, and test evaluationsStrong communication skills and proven ability to communicate battery related topics in cross-functional settingsTechnical mentorship experience (management experience preferred)Familiarity with basic scripting, data engineering and visualization using python or other relevant tools (programming knowledge preferred)Experience engaging with battery suppliers and evaluating different battery technologiesThis role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
