The Associated Press seeks a social video producer to join a growing team of diverse journalists focused on digital audiences. We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of how vertical video travels on social, site and other digital platforms, who can work collaboratively with other parts of the newsroom to make AP’s video journalism shine. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: The social video producer will be based in New York and report to the news editor for social video. In this role, you will script, produce and edit vertical video for platforms including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, as well as AP's website and app. From trending soundbites and breaking news, to reporter-driven explainers and in-the-field dispatches, you are someone who can closely follow the news cycle to proactively identify stories of interest to audiences. You will also monitor livestreams and curate video content for YouTube and APNews.com.
This position works Sunday through Thursday. As an AP journalist, you’ll also have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.
Preferred Qualifications: To excel in this role, you’ll need to be comfortable editing quickly in Adobe Premiere, especially when news breaks. Whether you’re crafting your video’s opening hook or writing an eye-catching headline, you’re always thinking about how your video can get people to stop scrolling on their phones. You also have an understanding of video analytics and know how to shift strategies based on audience habits. We’re also looking for a candidate who loves synthesizing news stories into conversational scripts — and it’s a big plus if you can then present those on-camera.
We’re looking for a journalist who:
- has proven experience in social video production, from recording videos on your phone, to using programs like Canva, the Adobe Suite, or something comparable.
- can quickly become conversant with AP style and every aspect of AP’s all formats news report.
- has strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with various news desks including: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
- pursues innovative and inclusive techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least two years of full-time work as an editor, reporter, video producer or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
- All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
