Position Description

The Vice President of Global Development Policy and Advocacy leads InterAction's efforts to shape U.S. Policy and legislation focused on global poverty reduction and effective development. The position helps lead and facilitate strategic partnerships with multiple actors critical to global development, including InterAction members, civil society groups worldwide, advocacy partners, policy makers, and the private sector. This position supports and advances the organization's values, mission, and long-term goals as approved by the Board of Directors.

This leadership position is an ideal opportunity for a hands-on individual who thrives in a multi-faceted and highly collaborative environment. The incumbent should have the ability to represent and lead a highly diverse NGO community. They should be able to effectively convene and mobilize a wide range of actors and build consensus among them to advance or advocate on key development issues. They should demonstrate a nurturing management style that cultivates skilled and independent talent.

Position Type

Full-time

This is a full-time position based in Washington D.C. InterAction maintains a hybrid work environment and employees are eligible to telework three days a week and work in the office two days a week. There is an expectation that employees will be based in the Washington D.C. region.

Essential Functions

  • Guides and oversees the principal areas of work of the global policy and advocacy , including but not limited to advocacy in the U.S. (Congress and the Executive Branch), preserving space for global civil society; and development effectiveness of the NGO sector.
  • Works to lead and build agreement for public policy initiatives and strategies among the sector.
  • Actively shapes the overall management and leadership of InterAction as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Works with the President and CEO on a range of initiatives and supports the team's engagement with the Board of Directors
  • Works closely with peers on the Executive Team, fostering strong programmatic connections across InterAction, particularly in alignment with the Humanitarian Policy and Practice team.
  • Manages staff and oversees the budget for the team; mentors staff and supports their development; responsible for overseeing recruitment and performance management for global policy and advocacy staff.
  • Supports InterAction's overall fundraising strategy; builds relationships with new partners, donors, and key external actors for activities or new initiatives that support InterAction's mission and values.
  • Develops and strengthens relations with InterAction member organizations. Supports recruitment of new members that strengthen the coalition.
  • Liaises with key global civil society networks, the UN, the U.S. government, and other agencies focusing on global development issues and policies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 15 years of professional experience in international affairs, including experience with international development.
  • Strong relationships with policy makers from various political parties.
  • Experience developing and executing strategies to change or influence policies.
  • Proven experience in cultivating external relationships and managing competing external demands.
  • Appreciation of the role and complexity of coalition advocacy and management.
  • A broad range of existing contacts with various external stakeholders and influencers in the U.S. and globally.
  • Superior public speaking, oral and written communications skills.
  • Experience managing teams and budgets.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Experience working in government and NGO's or related field.
  • Experience in fundraising and grant management.
  • Experience in coalition building.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial approach to problem solving and/or program expansion.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The position supervises a team of professional employees.
