Job Description Summary
The Department of Art and Design is seeking candidates for one full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Studio Art. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate ceramics, sculpture, other 3D studio courses, and possibly Introduction to Visual Art or other studio courses; working with the Chair and faculty members in charge of 3D studios to identify and apply health and safety best practices in courses and studios; studio management; collaborative curriculum and syllabi development; as well as other activities.

Qualifications for teaching ceramics include the ability to teach all foundation aspects of ceramics including general hand building techniques, strong background and skill level in wheel throwing and possessing a clear knowledge of operation of electric kilns. Experience with natural gas kilns a plus. Knowledge of contemporary trends in ceramics and historical ceramics is necessary. General working knowledge of slips, glaze chemistry, and clay mixing are also necessary.

Qualifications for teaching sculpture and other 3D media include teaching in wood, plaster, metal, 3D printing, mixed media and installation. In addition, a solid foundation in health and safety protocols with small and large scale power tools and chemicals.

Primary duties include teaching and related activities assigned during a 9 month academic year. Teaching: Faculty members are expected to teach 4 (6 contact hour) to 8 (3 contact hour) credit courses per year; develop syllabi, teaching materials (ability to organize, analyze and present knowledge or materials) related to courses taught; and collaborate with other faculty in the delivery of current courses and development of new courses and/or programs. In addition, faculty manage immediate studios spaces, develop and follow health/safety protocol for students in courses, mentor students, participate in professional development activities, as well as engage in assessment activities related to accreditation and program evaluation. Some disciplines require discipline specific certifications and/or licensure in the field for practice or functioning within the State of Illinois; degree specific course work and/or graduate degrees in the discipline.

All faculty positions are governed by the tenets of a collective bargaining agreement. Faculty are hired, evaluated, retained, promoted, and tenured on the basis of conditions covered in the union contract. It is expected that each faculty member engages in all three activities of teaching, research/creative activities and service.

Research: Faculty members are expected to engage in research and/or creative activity germane to an academic discipline, which results in submissions and material as works in refereed, professional and/or general readership publications; submit and receive externally awarded grants; submit proposals for presentations at academic and professional conferences; or engage in creative pursuits if in a creative, performing or theatrical arts discipline.

Service: Faculty members are expected to serve on committees, programs, and/or special task forces at the department, college, university, professional and community levels; assume leadership roles over time and as they increase in rank. These activities are not for compensation and have a relationship to the employee’s assigned responsibilities and to the university.

Required Education
An MFA in studio art with a specialization in ceramics and/or 3D studio areas from an accredited university. Meets rank requirements from a discipline within the unit as defined by the collective bargaining unit

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience working with a diverse population of students. Preferred experience leading collaborative and community-based artwork. String exhibition record in the field. Depth and breadth in the studio art disciplines. Ability to work across disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching a range of courses specializing in 3D Studio, ceramics and sculpture. Experience teaching at the college level and teaching upper-level courses. Previous academic experience at a two or four year college or university for 2 or more years teaching experience as determined by rank criteria. Previous professional experience related to the discipline for 2 or more years as determined by the discipline and rank criteria.
