Job Description:

The Strategic Business Communications (SBC) team is responsible for driving excellence in business performance, change, family, internal and leadership communications across Mars, Incorporated in addition to enabling the Mars Leadership Team (MLT) and Mars Board to deliver breakthrough performance through transformation that accelerates growth and value creation.

The Senior Director of Internal Communications & Community Engagement leads a team of three Associates and is responsible for stewarding Internal Communications and Community Engagement at Mars. The role is responsible for creating, managing, executing and measuring internal communications to drive business and engagement objectives, best practice sharing, and capability building to engage key stakeholders and all Associates in the Mars Enterprise Strategy, Mars Purpose, and Five Principles. The role is also responsible for Community Engagement at Mars focused on execution of signature programs and the overall storytelling of Mars’ collective philanthropic efforts globally.

The team is looking for an agile and creative addition who is a great thought leader, people leader and strategic communicator. The role reports to the VP Strategic Business Communications and partners closely with the external communications and public affairs teams in support of building the reputation of Mars from the inside out. The role is also responsible for partnering closely with all senior internal communicators at Mars to ensure that strategies, frameworks, practices and measurement techniques across Segments & Functions are aligned with business objectives and increase internal communications excellence.

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline (e.g., Communications, Journalism, Business)
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in related work (corporate communications, shareholder communications, change management).
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, and an ability to manage, grow and develop a strong team.
  • Excellent stakeholder relationship skills and strong partnering capabilities. Comfortable around higher management. Experience with collaboration across Mars functions, segments and markets a big advantage.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects and processes simultaneously, and able to track projects with varying deadlines. Ability to remain flexible and resilient under pressure and make quick decisions when necessary.

What will be your key responsibilities?

Key priorities include:

  • GLOBAL INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS: The Associate is responsible for driving internal communications strategies, plans and execution to bring key global priorities relevant to all Associates to life. The role leads a team that develops global frameworks, evolves channels, and creates best practices to solve emerging challenges in global internal communications; leads integrated communications campaigns and company-wide storytelling opportunities that support the Mars Enterprise Strategy, Purpose and Five Principles and are aligned with the Mars Brand; manages the annual global internal communications effectiveness survey; and leads the cross-Segment Internal Communications Council to ensure collaboration and coordination in messaging and campaigns across the enterprise. Partners with external communications and brand team as part of the Reputation Working Group to develop best-in-class communications and campaigns that help build Mars’ reputation from the inside out.
  • CORPORATE & SITE COMMUNICATIONS: Leads the Corporate Associate Communications strategy to engage and connect Corporate Associates. Partners with the Senior Manager of Global Internal Communications on the planning and execution. Oversees the McLean site communications strategy to drive McLean Associate engagement and connectivity in partnership with the Internal Communications Specialist.
  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Stewards Community Engagement at Mars in partnership with the Director of Community Engagement. Drives delivery of signature programs including the Mars Ambassador Program and Mars Volunteer Program helping ensure community engagement is a key part of the Associate experience and nurtures our Principles-based culture where Mars plays a positive role in its communities. Coordinates delivery of annual Mars giving totals in collaboration with the Segments and the Mars Impact Fund Executive Director. Builds an internal communications strategy around our community engagement actions and impact across Mars.
  • INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS ADVISING & CAPABILITY DEVELOPMENT: Provides strategic counsel, negotiating and influencing the opinion of business leaders across functions, to enable the most effective and efficient communications plans. The role is also responsible for mentoring market leaders in internal communications and supporting talent development for the Corporate Affairs talent pipeline. Provides Internal Communication governance, strategy and transformation leadership from the corporate center.
  • COMPASS REPORT & MEETING: Support the SBC team with the writing of the annual Compass report and development and delivery of the annual Compass meeting by serving as a quadrant content owner and steward to the process.
  • WRITING, EDITING, AGENCY & CHANNEL MANAGEMENT: The Associate is responsible for creating overarching messaging and presentations in support of strategic business communications and must have brilliant writing and solid presentation skills that help motivate and inspire stakeholders and drive decisions and action. The Associate is expected to role model standards and consistency of the Mars brand and tone of voice. The role also includes effective management of multiple communication platforms and creative agencies, as well as budgets.
  • TEAM DEVELOPMENT & MANAGEMENT: The Associate manages three direct reports, providing strong management and coaching, looking for opportunities for their Associates to learn and grow.
