JOB SUMMARY

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing analysis for the operation for including permit related samples and analysis that meet the requirements of local, state and federal regulatory agencies. Must train plant personnel at all facilities on the proper maintenance of sampling equipment and procedures for taking field readings. Will be responsible for implementing any new sample requirements for the facility. In addition to these duties,   Under general supervision; performs laboratory tests on raw and treated wastewater and other substances; records test results and data.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform and interpret analytical tests and observations necessary to monitor and control the treatment process, including relating data to BRC operators.
  2. Responsible for maintaining all applicable lab certifications, accreditations, or approvals to conduct compliance and process quality control work.
  3. QA/QC of current sampling procedures to ensure compliance with both regulatory requirements and contract requirements.
  4. Advises and recommends changes to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve facility performance.
  5. Conduct sampling and/or analysis, as required, to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations for wastewater treatment.
  6. Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents, stains, and media.
  7. Make calculations, keep records, and enter date of work performed.
  8. Perform or assist in performing surveys, laboratory experiments, and special projects to investigate unique problems and develop testing procedures and methods.
  9. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, glassware, and supplies, including general housekeeping; calibrate lab equipment.
  10. Supervise and train operators required to assist with sampling.
  11. Maintain inventory control of supplies and chemicals.
  12. Assists in other departments or facilities when needed.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  1. Extensive knowledge of federal and state lab standards and regulations.
  2. Regulatory knowledge of proper lab analytical testing methods
  3. Extensive knowledge of, and ability to comply with, safety regulations and standards.
  4. The principles, methods, and techniques of analytical chemistry.
  5. Mathematics and statistics as they relate to analytical chemistry.
  6. Safety practices and procedures as they apply to analyses in the laboratory.
  7. Research methods and techniques and the current literature in the field of analytical chemistry.
  8. The rules of evidence and the methods used in presenting evidence in court.
  9. Perform a variety of testing and analyses of wastewater samples; interpret findings and determine validity of results.
  10. Sit or stand for extended periods of time; twist to reach equipment; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
  11. Understand and operate office equipment including computers and applicable software.
  12. Maintain regular attendance and adhere to work schedule.
  13. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  14. Exceptional ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other employees and federal and state officials.
  15. Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of position in this class.
  16. Learn the operation, application, and basic maintenance of sophisticated chemical testing instruments and/or sampling equipment.
  17. Conduct research into chemical methods and techniques.
  18. Prepare technical forms, reports, and other correspondence.
  19. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, regulatory agencies, and the general public.
  20. Must follow all Safety, SOP’s, policies, guidelines and directives.
  21. Expected to have knowledge of ASTM methods and follow lab procedures.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES

  1. 2 plus years of experience in wastewater.
  2. Must have considerable knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  3. Must have computer knowledge.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Talking, Hearing, Seeing, Standing, Sitting, Walking, Fingering, Stooping, Crouching, Grasping, and Lifting up to 100lbs
2. The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and out
3. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
4. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to bio-solids.
5. The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
6. The workers frequently is in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
