Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.



Duties

**This is an OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUNCMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be December 29, 2023 with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.**

The Long-Term Care Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct care to Veterans with a variety of chronic medical conditions. On this 60-bed unit, LPNs work alongside RNs & NAs to care for Veterans with an array of conditions including short and long stay rehabilitation needs, SCI, dementia care and hospice. The CLC LPN provides 24/7 care in a homelike environment. This position is located at the main Reno VA campus. A recruitment incentive may be authorized for highly qualified applicants.

Major Duties include but not limited to:

  • Provides practical nursing care with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. The LPN provides nursing care to chronically ill and/or stabilized acutely ill patients who require rehabilitation and nursing services in the CLC, a VA Long Term Care (LTC) facility.
  • Carries out assigned patient care based on the patents' conditions; to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and performs treatments according to established policies/procedures. Observes for physical and/or emotional changes in patient's condition from prescribed medication/treatments, promptly and accurately documenting noted changes, and reporting any deviations from normal to RN or MD/DO.
  • Establishes constructive relationships with individual patients and their families to elicit feelings and attitudes, and to promote positive relationships, communication and socialization skills.
  • Fosters an environment of respect for individual patient and family rights to privacy and dignity in all aspects of care delivery. Effectively incorporates knowledge and understanding of established customer service standards in all interactions with patients, family members, and/or other inter/external customers.
  • Obtain and process blood, urine and other samples for laboratory testing as ordered by a provider and in accordance with unit and facility guidelines.
  • Performs support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patients, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialize equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during and following the procedure.
Preferred Experience:
  • 1 year of experience working in a skilled nursing/long-term care facility or unit.
