The Pain Management Physician is to assume the role of a primary treating physician for injured workers. Occupational medicine physicians or PM&R training is preferred but will consider family practice, neurology, and internal medicine. This position requires personable and skilled at relationship-building to help create a positive atmosphere at this location and will have the ability to diagnose pathology and recommend appropriate treatment essential. Must be able to communicate with patients and adjusters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Weaning of medications while patients are enrolled in the program.
  • Evaluating any issues such as pain flares or new complaints that arise in the program.
  • Providing basic medications for sleep and/or depression.
  • Evaluating patients with a multidisciplinary team to determine which candidates are appropriate on a medical basis for enrollment.
  • Analyze reports, test results, medical records, and examinations to diagnose the condition of patients and propose treatment options.
  • Prescribe pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented medical conditions.
  • Discuss potential side effects of medication/treatment with patients and ensure that all allergy information is up-to-date before prescribing medication/treatment.
  • Provide advice to patients for lifestyle and diet changes that may improve their health or help to treat the health issue they are experiencing.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, ongoing quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
  • Record complete, timely, and legible medical records.
 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • Functional restoration experience preferred.
  • Experience with California Workers Compensation System.
  • A good knowledge base of musculoskeletal pathology and treatment is essential.
  • Must have the ability to relate to patients in chronic pain.
  • Must understand the difference between chronic and acute pain.
  • Expected to coherently explain why increased pain is not necessarily related to increased tissue damage and how deconditioning leads to increased pain and depression.


RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current California Medical Practitioner License 
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registration, for prescription writing.
  • Experience providing primary care and diagnostic services in a clinical setting.
  • Experience prescribing appropriate medications, treatments, and health regimens to treat patient health issues.
  • Experience collaborating with specialists to explore patient health conditions and diagnose health issues.
  • Experience working in a team of healthcare professionals and collaborating with them to ensure positive, effective patient experiences with our organization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
