The Department of Risk Management and Compliance at the University of Denver is part of the Business and Financial Affairs Division. The Department collaborates with the DU community, the Chancellor’s Cabinet, and the Trustees to cultivate responsible, collaborative, ethical, and effective practices.
The Internal Audit Department reviews and audits University operations to identify opportunities to help DU improve operations and reduce risk, ultimately increasing the chances of meeting strategic goals. Internal Audit selects areas of focus based on an organization-wide risk assessment process designed to provide an objective opinion as to whether procedures in place reasonably achieve the goals of key processes. Internal Audit also provides DU employees with information about complying with relevant rules and regulatory requirements and where to report suspicious or improper activity that may violate University policies.
Position Summary
This position reports directly to the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer. With minimal supervision, plans, organizes, executes, and oversees assigned compliance audits and investigations in accordance with applicable standards and/or regulations. Interacts with all levels of management throughout the University. Evaluates, reviews, and analyzes policies and processes to identify gaps in controls and areas of improvement for the University. Develops recommendations based on synthesized information for management to improve the processes and compliance. Participates in University-wide initiatives, acting as a strong business consultant on complex issues.
Essential Functions
In addition to following the University of Denver’s policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Participates in the risk assessment process.
Independently plans, performs, and prepares reports on the execution of selected compliance audits and advisory services.
Develops audit programs and testing procedures relevant to risk and test objectives.
Assists with the supervision of audit associate or audit intern on compliance audits.
Ensures audit conclusions are based on a complete understanding of the process, circumstances, and risk.
Monitor and respond to hotline reports and management requested investigations. Investigate cases when appropriate and recommend appropriate actions and document findings.
Stays abreast of new developments and research in the ethics and compliance arena.
Identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and privacy risk for the University.
Develop/implement correction action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provide general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.
Establish effective working relationships to build credibility with faculty and staff to facilitate a culture or ethics, integrity, and compliance.
Collaborate with various departments at the University to develop compliance awareness and training programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work independently and effectively with the staff and management of the departments or areas under audit or review.
Comprehensive knowledge of accepted accounting and audit principles.
Demonstrated ability to effectively design and implement compliance department operations; ability to de-construct complex legal requirements and create compliance policies and procedures that are clear, effective, and sustainable.
Ability to collaborate with others to achieve goals.
Excellent listening skills and ability to identify gaps in logic.
Strong organization and follow-up skills including the ability to handle competing priorities and meet all deadlines and commitments.
Possess an appropriate combination of technical expertise in fields such as auditing, finance, technology, operations, compliance, or investigations.
Ability to give and follow instructions accurately and efficiently; proactive in asking clarifying questions to ensure work effort is directed toward desired outcome.
Awareness of risk, control, and governance responsibilities and what is necessary for successful tactical collaboration and information sharing.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and business writing skills.
Ability to identify sensitive issues and facilitate communications in a proactive manner to avoid surprises.
Willingness and ability to adapt to new circumstances, information, and challenges.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
5-7 years audit experience.
Relevant certification (i.e., CPA, CIA, CISA, CFE), or ability to certify within one year of start date.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting risk-based operational audits.
Experience working in higher education.
Experience with AutoAudit, Cognos, and Banner preferred.
Working Environment
Standard office environment.
Unexpected interruptions often occur, and stress level is moderate to high.
The noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible for full-remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.
