General Job Description
This is a paraprofessional position responsible for serving as a substitute in classrooms and/or the Early Childhood Laboratory’s front office as needed. Responsible for providing instructional/classroom support and/or clerical/administrative support in assigned area. Works under close supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director.
Essential Job Functions
Supervises, interacts with, and provides individual support and assistance to children, ensuring that intentional efforts are made to meet children’s individual needs.
Accepts directions/coordination from the Lead Teacher when working in classrooms.
Greets parents/guardians and visitors, gathers relevant information, and assists in answering their questions.
Uses electronic communication, learning, and attendance technology effectively on a daily basis.
Assists in checking children in and/or out earlier or later than laboratory hours as needed.
Acts as receptionist as needed, answering phones and email and responding to inquiries.
Maintains ECHL documents, records, and files.
Handles confidential and sensitive information related to child care.
Assists in processing incoming and outgoing mail, to include collecting mail from the post office.
Receives equipment and supply orders, inventories contents, and distributes to classrooms.
Participates in ECHL-related activities and special events.
Attends staff meetings.
Non-Essential Job Functions
May supervise university students working in the classroom.
May receive and/or supervise the receipt of payments from university students, parents/guardians, and others for ECHL-sponsored activities.
May clean classrooms, outside learning environments, and laundry as needed.
May conduct tours of the ECHL.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university and unit policies and procedures.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university, state licensing, and professional accreditation standards.
Knowledge of child growth and development.
Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.
Ability to operate a personal computer and learn university- and department-specific software.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.
Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Ability to work effectively and patiently with children and parents/guardians of children.
Ability to learn office- and university-specific software.
Ability to operate office and unit equipment such as copy machines, fax machines, thermometers, dishwasher, washer and dryer, laminators, and telephone.
Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.
Physical Demands
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must meet continuing education requirements of 24 hours per year and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications while employed.
Required Experience and Training
One year of experience in direct care for young children is required. CPR and First Aid certifications are required within 90 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Training in child development, education, or a related field is preferred. Experience in general office practices and procedures is preferred. Child Development Associate (CDA) certification is preferred.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check.

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility
This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
