Essential Functions/Duties
This position is part of the Land Use Services (LUS) Division and is assigned to the Department of Planning & Zoning’s (P&Z). The Urban Planner II brings strong knowledge and experience in administering a municipal Zoning Ordinance written for an urban context. The work is performed in conjunction with other members of the LUS Division and with staff from other Departments and is supervised by the Principal Planner of LUS.
The employee in this position reviews applications for special use permits (special zoning approvals for some business types) and other land use applications . This employee interprets Zoning Ordinance and related land use policies/regulations and applies them to such applications. Other responsibilities include active engagement with applicants, City departments, and community groups in the evaluation, research, and preparation of staff reports for presentation to the Planning Commission and City Council. This position also collaborates and coordinate with planners in other divisions within the Department. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including customer service experience, are required. The Urban Planner II must manage competing priorities and demonstrate strong organization, judgement, communication, and multi-tasking skills.

Review of applications for special use permits (special zoning approvals for some business types) and other land use applications.
Administer the Zoning Ordinance regulations in the review of building permits, applications for business licenses, and certificates of occupancy, while interfacing with other City department staff; Correspond with applicants, City departments and community representatives in the evaluation, research and preparation of staff reports and presentations for the Planning Commission and City Council; Collaborate and coordinate with planners in other divisions within the Department; Communicate directly with members of the public, especially small business owners and community groups; Participate in other policy development and planning projects; and Other related duties as required.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
Four-Year College Degree from an accredited college or university in regional, or urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies; three years of experience or Master's degree with 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Four-Year College Degree plus four years' experience or Masters' degree plus 2 years' experience; knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and strong writing, analytical and communication skills. At least two years of experience working with the public. Experience in planning at the local government level and demonstrated ability to work and resolve issues with diverse customers.
