Serves as the supervisory Supervisory Physician in support of a major extramural research program area of national scope, involving epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, and other basic and clinical studies.
Plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates programs and initiatives in the assigned specialty area of research.
Administers clinical and basic research projects, including clinical trials, supported by the assigned organization.
Formulates concepts for Program Announcements, Requests for Applications, and Requests for Proposals to foster research in new or underdeveloped areas of research.
Takes administrative measures to achieve program goals through contacts with researchers and in administration of grant applications and ongoing projects, and communicates program goals in response to inquiries.
Maintains liaison with investigators, institutions, organizations and other government agencies engaged in assigned research activities and related fields; evaluates applications for research and training grants; applies specific knowledge of research needs and current proposed research and training; and furnishes advice and assistance to potential grantees in the development and preparation of their research proposals.
Establishes goals and objectives for the assigned research area and organizes efforts to initiate pioneering programs and resolve critical issues involving accomplishment of the research.
Collaborates in the planning, development, implementation and administration of research and training programs, projects, and contracts, conferences and workshops.
Serves as a primary investigator or project lead for research projects of broad and complex scope to treat problems that are exceptionally difficult and unyielding to investigation and/or require unconventional or novel approaches or complex research techniques.
Provides specialized medical expertise in applied and/or basic research.
