Job Overview

Under the general direction of the Unit Head of Metadata Services, this position will perform complex and original cataloging and metadata enrichment/enhancement for Booth Family Center for Special Collections materials and digital content in a variety of languages and formats. This position will provide expertise and input in the development, implementation, and assessment of metadata policies and procedures of Georgetown University Library; serve as a metadata expert to support the digital scholarship efforts of the Library; advise staff and users on metadata standards; assist in development and implementation of metadata best practices, tools, procedures and workflows; plan integration of metadata between systems and extending relationships between resources; and lead the Library's efforts to support, improve, and increase the overall discoverability of local/unique special and digital collections. The incumbent will also participate in cooperative metadata endeavors such as NACO; actively participate in local and national discussions relating to the access, retrieval, description, and management of library resources; monitor external emerging trends and development in the metadata field; and assist the Unit Head to develop and coordinate appropriate strategies for organizing, providing access to and enabling discovery of information; serve as a backup to the Unit Head for inter-departmental work related to Metadata, Electronic Resources, and Acquisitions.

Work Interactions

Work interactions for this position include the following:

Works closely with curators, liaison librarians and technologists in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, the Research Services Department and the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services Department.
Works closely with fellow librarians, specialists, and paraprofessionals in the Technical Services Department
Works with other Georgetown University Library staff
Works with staff of other Georgetown University libraries and institutes
Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from ALA-accredited institution
2 or more years of professional experience in performing original and complex cataloging, enhancement and enrichment of special collections/digital materials
Demonstrated knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata formats, standards and schema
Working knowledge of special collections and rare book metadata standards including Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials and Books (DCRM(B)), Descriptive Cataloging of Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Manuscripts (AMREMM), and RBMS (Rare Books and Manuscripts Section) genre terms
Working knowledge of descriptive bibliography and issues specific to rare materials
Working knowledge of current metadata standards such as FRBR, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Program for Cooperative Cataloging/Library of Congress Policy Statements, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and other emerging standards
Experience with a national bibliographic utility, such as OCLC, and a local online system, such as Alma
Experience working with Library software such as MarcEdit or other MARC editing tools
Commitment to fostering a diverse environment and workplace; and ability to work with a diverse population
Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of issues and emerging trends in metadata, discovery tools, digital library development, digital preservation, & cataloging standards and practices
Understanding of linked data principles, including RDF and ontologies
Experience working in an academic or research library
Knowledge of preservation metadata schemas and practices
Proficiency in Latin and reading knowledge of one or two modern foreign languages
Demonstrated programming skill and ability (Python, Php, Java, etc.), especially related to metadata manipulation and/or experience with OpenRefine and other data management tools
Experience using digital asset management systems and institutional repositories
Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail, demonstrated problem-solving skills, and flexibility
Ability to work in a continually changing environment, to exercise initiative, and to work independently as well as part of a team

The expected pay range for this position is $47,586 to $65,000 per annum.

Georgetown University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity and external market pay for comparable jobs.
