Teck Alaska Incorporated is looking for a Principal Metallurgist to join our Red Dog Operations, one of the world's largest producers of zinc concentrate. 

 

Reporting to the Superintendent of Integrated Planning (IPlan), the Principal Metallurgist is accountable for providing leadership to the metallurgy team and ensuring the business achieves its objectives through developing high quality weekly, forecast, budget, and five-year business integrated plans. They will lead the technical development of all Metallurgical Engineers and technicians and provide milling expertise and operational guidance. They are responsible for the metallurgical production budget, forecasting and reporting, and ensuring data integrity and accuracy.

 

To be successful, this role will require a candidate with excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, who can build relationships across multi-disciplinary teams. This role requires a self-motivated individual who is driven to make data-based decisions and can handle opposing priorities in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, and dynamic environment.

 

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site with travel provided to and from Anchorage, AK to our Red Dog site.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Champion Safety and Environmental Compliance: Be a courageous safety leader, promoting a culture of safety leadership aligned with the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance (HSEC) commitments. Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations and standards.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Supervise the technical development of the metallurgy team, including performance assessments, professional growth, and succession planning, ensuring alignment with company’s strategic goals.
  • Integrated Planning: Manage metallurgical production planning for the 5-year business plan, 1-year budget plan, monthly and weekly plans. Ensuring plans are optimized and executable.
  • Continuous Improvement: Embed continuous improvements practices into planning process and lead efforts to enhance performance and/or reduce costs in crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, and water treatment operations.
  • Variance Management: Conduct effective variance management on mid- to short-range plans through trade-off and scenario analysis to optimize outcomes and improve future plans.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Foster collaboration across department areas to create an integrated plans that maximizes value chain efficiency.
  • Milling Process Expertise and Operational Guidance: Offer domain expertise to address operational issues in milling processes. Provide expert guidance to Integrated Production and Execution teams, particularly in operational decision-marking and variance response strategies.
  • Operational Modes Development: Assist in the development of operating modes and targeted action response plans (TARP).
  • Production Reporting: Ensure accurate and reliable metallurgical and water treatment production reporting, including forecasts and reconciliation processes.
  • Concentrate Production Optimization: Collaborate with Marketing, Trail, and Corporate teams to optimize concentrate specifications and production plans.
  • Leadership Support: Act as a stand-in for the Superintendent, Integrated Planning as required.
Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering degree (Mineral Processing, Metallurgical or Chemical.) is required.
  • Minimum ten (10) years senior level milling experience, preferably in base metals.
  • Must have prior experience coordinating and supervising technical teams.
  • Experience identifying, leading, and implementing projects that improve metallurgical performance and/or operating costs.
  • Strong communicator, able to communicate with key stakeholders clearly and concisely.
  • Highly motivated teammate with ability to develop strong relationships across multi operational subject areas.
  • Exhibit courageous leadership in providing guidance in a variety of situations and environments.
  • Efficiently work under high pressure situations and embed effective time management in execution of responsibilities.
  • Advanced software skills in MS Office, especially spreadsheet.
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Knowledge of PowerBI and/or other data analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with Process Control System, Grinding Expert Systems and JKSimMet software.
