Qualifications: A current, active and unrestricted North Dakota Nursing License. Minimum of five (5) years experience in public health, community health, school health or pediatric nursing. First Aid and CPR instructor credentials (or obtained in the first 6 months of hire).
Job Goal: School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. Goals of this position are to facilitate positive parent and student responses to development; promote health, safety and wellness for families, students, and staff; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with families, staff, and community partners to build student and family capacity for adaption, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Function as a healthcare expert for the school district and act as a liaison amongst students, families, and healthcare providers concerning health promotion and wellness. Serve as a resource for school nurses and school administrators. Lead, educate, and collaborate with district school nurses and unlicensed assistive persons (UAPs) including supervision, scheduling, coaching, evaluation, and any other supportive measures. (Hiring/interviewing/yearly evaluations/absence tracking) Train and/or ensure that all school nurses are onboarded and trained regarding policies and procedures, screenings, and medical procedures. Monitor nurse and UAP compliance with GFPS policies, North Dakota Board of Nursing scope of practice and job responsibilities. Collaborate with local and state public health officials in identifying contagious disease outbreaks and work to establish population healthcare goals. Provide recommendations to district leadership and administrators regarding capital and healthcare best practices and supplies. Collaborate with the Safety and Security Manager on establishing emergency plans for healthcare. Provide yearly staff training/education to include, but not limited to, universal precautions, medication administration, medications, staff wellness, CPR, Individualized Health Plans and Action Plans. Establish and continue to build community health partnerships. Maintain the dignity, privacy and confidentiality of students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), HIPPA and Head Start Performance Standards. Maintain student health records and plans, including health, dental, and nutrition history. Assume responsibility for monitoring student immunizations as required by law as students enroll in the program. Notify parents of needed immunizations and provide resource lists of community immunization clinics. Ensure annual standing orders for medications are signed annually by the Health Officer, and the Nurse Manager. Coordinate health screenings, new student registration, and vaccinations for the District in conjunction with outside agencies. Collaborate with the Child Nutrition Program staff to accommodate dietary needs of children. Collaborate with the Mental Health Coordinator on training for staff and students as appropriate. Perform Mantoux tests and/or assist Medical Career teachers with testing Medical Careers students as required for their clinical rotations. Maintain and update all health policies, procedures and health forms.
Additional nursing responsibilities when working at school sites may include:
Provide short-term care to students with an injury or illness prior to notifying the parent/guardian should the student need to be sent home or need further medical attention. Administer medication to students according to school policies and guidelines. Provide short-term care to staff if medical needs arise. All nursing actions will be in accordance with the scope of practice of the North Dakota Board of Nursing, Grand Forks Public Schools policies and procedures, ECKLC, Child Care Aware, and Caring for Our Children. Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others.
Terms of Employment: Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend time, 10 month calendar
