Job Description Summary
The Center for Public History at Shawnee State University seeks applicants interested in the preservation of Underground Railroad historical sites and the promotion of cultural heritage tourism in Appalachia.

The Outreach Specialist will facilitate community outreach and assist with the development of historical site applications for the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. Working with the Director and/or Assistant Director of Research and Outreach and with other community partners, Outreach Specialists will help identify, research, and document the history of Underground Railroad related historical sites in the tri-state region of OH-KY-WV. Specialists will assist with archival work, social media, and other communication and outreach initiatives. This collaborative position is part of a larger project team and reports (as appropriate) to the Director or Assistant Director of Research and Outreach. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis for this position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Primary functions involve community outreach and research. Conduct research and documentary work on Underground Railroad historical sites. Work with the Director and/or Assistant Director of Research and Outreach to secure needed documentation to establish the authenticity and significance of historical sites associated with the Underground Railroad in the tristate region of OH-KY-WV. Work product will include the generation of bibliographies of primary and secondary sources, photographic images, and oral history interviews of the descendants of Freedom Seekers and their allies (the agents, conductors, and funders of the Underground Railroad) who remained or returned to the region. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some familiarity with the local history of the UGRR in the Tri-State of OH-KY-WV.
Superb writing and communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a range of team members.
A curiosity about local history and cultural heritage tourism.
Demonstrated ability to organize time and tasks efficiently to meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work with the public and coworkers in a positive, professional manner.
Experience using Apple- or Windows-based PCs and software, MS Office products, and Adobe Suite applications.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university (History, Communications, Journalism, Museum Studies degree preferred).
2. Or successful completion of at least 16 semester hours or equivalent in history or related field from an accredited college, university, trade, technical or vocational school beyond high school level.
3. Or possess at least three years' experience in other writing and storytelling-centered equivalent that required working productively with public audiences and subject matter experts.
4. Must have a valid driver's license.
