USC Summer Programs offers students a preview of “freshman year” through its college immersion experience. Students explore Los Angeles as a laboratory for cultural learning beyond the traditional classroom. Our programs are designed to combine college level coursework, academic field trips, and structured extracurricular activities. USC Summer Programs offers 4-week courses in a variety of subjects from which students choose one course for intense study. Courses are interactive, engaging, and challenging, and students receive 3 units of transferrable USC elective credit upon successful completion of the 4-Week program.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Life Health & Safety, this is a full-time, live-in professional position supporting, roughly, 600 students and 60 residential assistant staff. This position will work directly with students who experience difficulties as it relates to their social or emotional adjustment to USC Summer Programs. This role performs a variety of important daily operational tasks and requires the highest level of flexibility, communication, and a positive attitude to both students and peers. 

Responsibilities:

Assist the Associate Director in identifying students needing support.Provide clinical support and coping tools to students with emotional or social concerns. Work directly with students who experience difficulties within the program due to social or emotional adjustment.Serve as a collaborative member of the leadership team, willing to troubleshoot and problem solve across teams to foster a positive environment for staff and students.Provide leadership to the RA team, helping them understand and carry out their tasks and enforce limitations to their roles.Uphold University policies to protect the health and safety of all students and staff. Lead the RAs in understanding and upholding policies.Serve as a solution-focused liaison between the RA staff and the broader leadership team to foster collaboration, resolve concerns, and aid in crisis prevention.Assist the Associate Director in the facilitation of discussions in supporting program staff to cultivate a healthy, positive culture and triage cases that require further evaluation and referral to USC’s mental health professionals. Assist and participate in the development of program-wide initiatives and policies related to student wellness, safety, anti-bullying and social/emotional health.Assist the Associate Director with staff trainings related to detecting and assessing mental health needs of students.Establish rapport with students and RA staff through attentive listening, genuine care and support, awareness of student needs, and appropriate consultation and referral.Participate in departmental leadership team check in meetings.Other duties as assigned by department leadership.

Required Work Schedule

Summer Intensive Program: June 16- July 13, 2024 (Full-time+ hours per week, live-in, 24/7 position, overtime hours likely). Evening and weekend hours required, which are the busiest times, lighter hours during the daytime.

In addition to the summer session (June 16- July 13, 2024), this role includes: 

Staff Training: Must have full open availability to attend trainings on campus beginning the week of June 10, 2024Summer Prep: April 1 – June 7, 2024 (approximately 2-3 hours/week)

Room and BoardThree meals provided daily, including weekendsThe hourly rate for this position is $30/hour. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree within the area of Social Work or Psychology and experience with high school students in a counselor position. Either a licensed mental health provider or can be currently earning a master’s in social work / psychology with the intention of becoming a licensed mental health provider. Experience within residence life /residential education Superior writing, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to understand the unique social-emotional needs of individual students Demonstrated commitment to students’ wellbeing and learning Demonstrated cultural awareness and competency Ability to adjust to changing priorities and perform well under pressure Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
