The incumbent is directly responsible for the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of inpatient treatment program operations.


The incumbent has broad program management and supervisory responsibilities, which include the operation and management of a key clinical program at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System (RHJ VAHCS). Responsibilities include the development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures; oversight of administrative and programmatic resources; and monitoring of outcomes, using a data-driven quality assurance process in a program that delivers specialized, complex, highly professional services that are important program components of the Medical Center and significantly affect the health care provided to veterans.

The professional psychologist will be able to function with a minimum of clinical oversight and is expected to make autonomous decisions regarding clinical issues. The psychologist is responsible for providing psychological services to patients presenting with a mental health diagnosis, as well as those with complex diagnostic pictures. The psychologist has full professional responsibility for the psychological treatment of the complex clinical cases. Specifically, the incumbent is responsible for providing evidence-based interventions in accordance with accepted standards of practice. The psychological services should be informed by science.

The psychologist is also expected to deliver services from a culturally competent perspective. The psychologist is expected to consult with fellow team members and other mental health professionals on a regular basis regarding individual mental health cases. The psychologist will provide clinical supervision to trainees if deemed appropriate by the Program Director. The psychologist's clinical work effort includes clinical oversight and supervision of the work of psychology technicians and peer specialists.

The supervisory psychologist exercises independent judgment in the practice and provision of psychological services (clinical care, consultation, and education). S/he consults with peers; his/her first line supervisor (Acute and Inpatient MH Services Division Chief) and Discipline Lead. The Acute and Inpatient MH Services Division Chief is the direct supervisor for the psychologist. The Psychology Discipline Lead ensures adherence to professional standards of the practice of psychology.
