You will participate in policy-making meetings and conferences, serving as an advisor on issues related to identifying information that will further the Agency's mission and goals. You will also maintain working relationships with representatives of the media; Federal, state, and local governments; and members of professional, business, civic, and other public interest groups.

This position starts at a salary of $103,409.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $134,435.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $134,435.00 (GS-13 Step 10).

While serving as a Public Affairs Specialist, your duties will include:
Managing news media coverage for the agency within their area of responsibility both during normal operations and at times of crisis, including developing relationships with media; pitching stories; creating products and activities to explain agency policies and procedures, or laws and regulations; responding to media inquiries both on the record as well as with background information as a spokesperson for the agency.
Creating communication materials such as public affairs guidance, communication plans, media event plans, media advisories, news releases, responses to media queries, and agency statements. Implementing communication plans and measures communication performance. Arranging and staffing news media, particularly national news media, visits.
Providing guidance, assistance, and consultation to the field offices, sectors, and branches concerning agency procedures relating to, and responding to, requests from media or the general public, specialized groups and communities, and governmental entities using agency services or affected by agency policies, programs, and operations.
Maintaining relationships with "clients" within the organization, such as local leadership or program managers, to ensure the public affairs specialist is aware of operations as well as changes in legislation and regulations; develops guidance and communications plans in response to these agency activities, and serves as an advisor on all public affairs matter.
