Summary: Our client’s midsized general practice law firm, located in the heart of Chicago and boasting a team of 120 dedicated attorneys and growing, is seeking a dynamic and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join the leadership team. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in overseeing and optimizing the firm's operational functions, ensuring seamless collaboration among various departments, and contributing to the overall growth and success of the organization.

Responsibilities

As the COO, you will be responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the firm, with a specific focus on managing the following key areas:

  • Information Technology (IT): Work closely with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to develop and implement technology strategies that enhance operational efficiency, client service, and data security.
  • Marketing and Business Development: Collaborate with the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to develop and execute marketing strategies that elevate the firm's brand, attract new clients, and foster client relationships.
  • Finance: Partner with the Director of Finance in managing the financial health of the firm, including budgeting, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Human Resources (HR): Partner with the Director of HR to develop and implement HR strategies, policies, and programs that support the firm's talent acquisition, development, and retention goals.
  • Office Services: Work with the Manager of Office Services to ensure the smooth day- to-day operation of the office, including facilities management, vendor relationships, catering, and other administrative functions.
  • Research & Library Services: Collaborate with the Director of Research & Library Services to ensure that attorneys have access to comprehensive and up-to-date legal research and continuing legal education (CLE) resources.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role within a law firm or professional services organization.
  • Strong understanding of law firm operations, including IT, finance, marketing, HR, and office services.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills with the ability to foster a collaborative, team-oriented and results-driven culture.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement initiatives that drive operational excellence and support the firm's strategic objectives.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently with attorneys, staff, and external stakeholders.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, law, or a related field; advanced degree (MBA, JD) preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience plus a proven track record of success in a similar COO or senior leadership role within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Familiarity with the legal industry, including an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within the legal services market.

Working Conditions And Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment.
  • Limited physical effort required and very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Must be able to comply with all safety requirements in our workplace.
