Faculty Position

Brentwood TN, United States Vanderbilt University Medical Center Full time

The Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has an immediate opening for a physician-scientist (i.e., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) to join our faculty as co-leader of
our growing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Program.
By 2050, it is estimated that the annual global death toll related to AMR will be 10 million, surpassing cancer. Vanderbilt, comprising VUMC and Vanderbilt University (VU), is committed to the fight against AMR, and to that end, we are seeking faculty candidates to join our growing AMR program. Successful candidates will join a thriving and highly collaborative research and clinical community. Our ID Division and VUMC is home to myriad investigators with expertise along the translational research continuum focused on the critical challenge of AMR. Expertise ranges from early bench discovery (including mechanisms of resistance and persistence, target identification for novel therapeutics), to novel diagnostic strategies to identify resistant pathogens, to a range of core clinical research (including population-based epidemiologic studies such as through the CDC’s Emerging Infections Program), to implementation strategies to detect and prevent the development and spread of antimicrobial resistant pathogens (including nationally recognized programs in healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship). To that end, we are seeking a physician-scientist with research expertise in AMR translational or clinical research to co-lead the program. We anticipate that this clinically focused candidate will work together with a basic sciences counterpart focused on antimicrobial screening and discovery work.
VUMC is the largest comprehensive research, teaching and patient care health system in the Mid-South region. Our growing health system includes 7 hospitals, and we have many unique and specialized services including the region's Level 1 Trauma Center and Burn Center, the No. 1 ranked pediatric hospital in the Southeast, a highly experienced, high-volume Transplant Center, and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region. Vanderbilt’s robust research enterprise ranks among the top 10 in the country. The Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (VICTR) facilitates nearly every aspect of clinical and translational research at Vanderbilt. The highly collaborative research environment includes centers and institutes such as the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology, and Inflammation (VI4), the Center of Health Services Research (CHSR), the Center for Clinical Quality and Implementation Research (CCQIR), the Center for Personalized Microbiology (CPMi), Vanderbilt Microbiome Innovation Center (VMIC), the Vanderbilt Center for Structural Biology (VCSB), the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH), and a world-class Hospital Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship group, to name just a few.
Ideal candidates will be mid-career (Associate Professor, late Assistant Professor, early Professor) and demonstrate a track record of academic success in either or both translational or clinical research and leadership in the AMR field. Primary research focus could encompass a range of topics including, but not limited to, therapeutic or diagnostic trials, translational science, epidemiology, implementation science, health economics, and/or health outcomes. Candidates should also have a record of successfully securing research funding. Salaries and benefits packages are highly competitive.
At Vanderbilt we welcome employees from a wide variety of backgrounds, traditions, and experiences. We witness the vitality and creativity that comes from bringing different perspectives together. We are particularly interested in attracting candidates who are Under-Represented in Medicine (URiM) for these positions and seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. Minoritized persons/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
Candidates should submit a letter of interest and CV by January 31, 2024 to: mary.smith@vumc.org
