The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for a full-time academic cardiologist at the assistant or associate professor level with a clinical and academic focus on Heart Failure and Transplantation with an estimated start date of July 2024.
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs among others as well as strength in heart failure and structural interventions.
Located at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the facility offers state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, and a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging. The core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds, and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean’s) and 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with affiliated hospitals and research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. The applicant would be expected to provide in-patient ward service and consultations for heart failure patients one week in 5, provide on call service for advanced HF/transplant and LVAD patients one week in 5, participate in advanced HF/transplant and LVAD out-patient clinics at least 1.5 days per week, possible participation in echo lab and/or cath lab (right heart catheterization and myocardial biopsy), and participate in teaching medical students and residents and fellows.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, with FRCPC certification in Cardiology and have completed an advanced HF/transplant fellowship; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.
Candidates must have a strong academic track record, either research or quality improvement. Practice profile will be negotiated based on expected academic and clinical deliverables. Academic appointment ranking will be based on qualifications and experience, however, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Associate Professor or above.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
The Department of Medicine is committed to ensuring equity, diversity and inclusion in our work environment. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous persons, visible minorities members (racialized persons), persons with disabilities, women, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with equitable, diverse and inclusive communities. Upon request, accommodations due to a disability are available throughout the recruitment process.
Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. David Birnie, Division Head, Cardiology, care of:
