About MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Pediatric Transplant Unit - C5-1
C5-1 is a 15 bed state-of-the-art Pediatric Transplant Unit, serving patients receiving care for life-saving organ transplants, including liver, small bowel and multi-organ transplants (liver, stomach, small bowel, kidney, pancreas and colon). As one of only seven centers that perform pediatric small bowel and multi-visceral organ transplants, the Transplant Center for Children is the nation's third largest transplant program. Our Pediatric Transplant Team provides complex medical and surgical care for patients regionally, nationally and internationally. Our team is notable for its high success rates, history of innovation, cohesive teamwork and family-friendly approach to the transplant process.
The nurses on C5-1 work in collaboration with physicians, registered dieticians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, physical/occupational/speech therapists, clinical technicians and child-life specialists to deliver high-quality care, transplant-focused care. Through the help of our full-time Clinical Educator, our nurses are trained to care for patients requiring telemetry monitoring, high-risk medications and in-depth discharge teaching. The nursing team on C5-1 is a highly educated and motivated group of professionals who actively participate in shared governance, continuing education, and attend regional and national conferences.

Professional care provider who assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients from admission through discharge. In collaboration with the patient and family, provides theory-based professional nursing care and coordinates care delivery with various members of the interdisciplinary team.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program preferred. Associates degree from an accredited School of nursing required. Basic computer skills required.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, safety standards, and MedStar SPIRIT Values. Collects and analyzes significant patient's information that pertains to physical, psychological, socio-cultural, economic, spiritual, and life-style behaviors and efficiently leveraging available technology.
* Functions autonomously providing relationship-based care that promotes continuous, consistent, efficient and accountable delivery of nursing care using the nursing process with a favorable focus on patient experience.
* Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery, with a focus on quality and safety.
* Practices within legal boundaries of nurse practice act and possesses a theoretical understanding of the universal ethical principles. Individualizes patients plan of care, focusing on short and long-range goals and effectively uses a variety of teaching resources to meet the learning needs of patients and families.
* Identifies actual and potential patient safety issues and acts accordingly while incorporating HRO quality and safety principles.
* Establishes priorities and delegates tasks to peers and ancillary staff as appropriate to scope of practice and unit requirements.
* Follows the chain of command by consulting with other healthcare professionals and seeks assistance as needed.
* Evaluates the patient's response to treatment and progress toward short and long-range goals and revises nursing interventions as appropriate.
* Initiates and monitors discharge planning activities in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
* Supports and contributes to the unit, department, entity, and organizational goals inclusive of the mission, vision, and values.
* Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
* Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
