Santa Cruz CA, United States University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) Full time

The CalBridge Program in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences invites applications for the CalBridge Executive Director .

About CalBridge
The CalBridge program is a partnership of the 9 University of California (UC) campuses that have undergraduate programs, 22 California State Universities (CSU) and 116 community colleges (CCC) in the state of California, initiated to increase the number of PhD scholars in STEM fields from historically underrepresented groups. Participants receive support to successfully pursue scholarship in physics & astronomy, mathematics and computer science. Once admitted into CalBridge, participants benefit from financial support, mentoring by research faculty, professional development and participation in research opportunities.

CalBridge consists of both an undergraduate and a doctoral program. The CalBridge Undergraduate Program provides intensive mentoring and professional development for third- and fourth-year CSU students and sponsors summer research opportunities at major research institutions, with the goal of achieving competitiveness with their applications to PhD programs. The CalBridge Doctoral Program focuses on professional development in the areas of research leadership and pedagogy, continued development of professional networks, and acculturation into leadership careers in academia, government and industry.

Overview
Reporting to the Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences, the Executive Director (ED) provides strategic leadership and implements the vision and direction of the CalBridge program. The ED will provide advocacy with the state legislature and increase the program’s funding portfolio. The incumbent must possess academic credentials to understand research, scholarship, and professional pathways and foster networks with academics in the STEM fields. The ED oversees the daily operation and programmatic goals of CalBridge, including supervision of staff, financial oversight, outreach and recruitment. While CalBridge is a partnership across the UCs, CSUs, and community colleges, the ED position will reside at the University of California, Santa Cruz, the lead UC campus for the CalBridge program. Employment is contingent on the approval of a concurrent appointment to the adjunct professor (without salary) title series.

Duties include the following:

  • Provide vision and strategic direction for the long-term trajectory and sustainability of the program and direct program operations.
  • Advocate with the California legislature and Governor’s Office, through partnerships with the UC Office of the President.
  • Increase fundraising activities, including garnering support from foundations and other private-sector institutions.
  • Oversee the communication and publicity plan to recruit participants, mentors and researchers.
  • Develop, maintain, and expand relationships across UC, CSU and CCC campuses and STEM disciplines in an effort to extend the CalBridge reach and network.
  • Provide administrative leadership including supervision of staff, financial management, and implementation of programmatic goals.
  • Implement and manage the CalBridge Undergraduate Program, which includes the distribution of financial support; the delivery of the academic year’s mentoring and professional development activities, the Summer Research Program, and subgroup programs in the established disciplines of Physics & Astronomy, Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • Implement and manage the CalBridge Doctoral Program including the use of program funds to support doctoral study and professional development programming, which includes workshops and retreats focused on the development of pedagogical and research-leadership skills and academic acculturation.
  • As chair of the CalBridge Executive Committee, consisting of faculty and administrative directors of each campus, the ED fosters meaningful and impactful collaboration, joint decision making, and long-range strategies.
  • Develop assessment tools for tracking programmatic success and manage annual reporting as required by funding agencies and partner institutions.

Applicants with the desired knowledge, skills, and/or experience are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • In depth knowledge of, and commitment to diverse student communities and experiences of underrepresented groups in STEM and building inclusive communities.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully supporting and advocating for diverse students, staff, and faculty.
  • Exceptional management skills including ability to supervise professional staff, oversee budgets from multiple funding sources, create effective systems and processes.
  • Experience with creating assessment tools to track programmatic success and learning outcomes.
  • Strong presentation and writing skills.
  • Complex understanding and demonstrated experience in cultivating relationships with financial supporters, state legislators, and government committees.
  • Track record of forging strong partnerships and relationships across multiple institutions.
  • Experience building and coordinating educational STEM pipeline programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in guiding others in strategic planning.
  • Ability to develop effective communication strategies to recruit participants and mentors.
  • Ability to work effectively with scholars across STEM disciplines.

For appointment the candidate or appointee to a faculty administrator title must not have been found in violation of the UC and/or UCSC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment policies within the last 10 years; and must not have been disciplined for violating the Faculty Code of Conduct ( APM 015) within the last 10 years (discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve the matter).
