Overview:

The prestigious and world-renowned Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins University have a senior level legal opportunity for an Associate General Counsel. This confident, hands-on, and client-centered attorney will be given the unique opportunity of navigating the complexities of a distinguished university and health care system. This individual will act as a system expert and provide legal guidance and counsel on transactions involving physician group acquisitions, healthcare affiliations and services agreements. Working as part of a team that includes finance, planning and other professionals, this individual will be the legal and compliance expert in structuring, drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a wide variety of healthcare transactions.


Key Responsibilities
  • Serve in a dual role for JHU and JHHS, helping bridge the gap between the Johns Hopkins Medicine clinical and academic enterprises, and support both JHU and JHHS on a broad range of legal issues.
  • Serve as lead transactional attorney in negotiating, structuring, and managing joint JHU/JHHS affiliations with, and acquisitions of, third party entities including health systems, FQHCs, physician practices and community hospitals.
  • Spot regulatory issues and, in partnership with other internal and external counsel as needed, ensure compliance with the Stark Act and antikickback laws.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and regulatory developments affecting healthcare providers.
  • Advise on creating new service lines, new quality metrics programs and establishing new modes of healthcare service delivery (including telehealth, concierge, and related modalities).
  • Assist in the documentation of agreements within a growing academic medical center, including agreements among the components of that academic medical center.
  • Advise on risk management, healthcare and billing compliance, corporate compliance and governance, general contractual matters, telemedicine matters, faculty/physician compensation, and research matters.
  • Provide legal advice to University and Health System administrators on operations and policy questions involving transactions with physicians in the community.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other colleagues in the University Office of Vice President and General Counsel and Health System Legal Department in a highly collaborative fashion.


Experience: Eight to ten or more (8-10+) years of legal experience, including a minimum of five years (5+) spent advising healthcare clients, preferably academic medical centers, or similar complex health care organizations. Experience with drafting complex healthcare transactional documents and superior understanding of the healthcare regulatory environment is essential.


Location: JHHS and JHU are headquartered in Baltimore, MD. Remote and hybrid options available for the right candidate. East Coast candidates preferred.

Bar: Member in good standing of the Maryland Bar or eligible for and successfully completes the one-day (3 hour) Out-of-State Attorney Examination.
