DESCRIPTION

The Director of Grants and Contracts oversees the direction and management of JVS SoCal’s Grants Department and reports to the Chief Development and Marketing Officer. This is a hybrid position with regular in-office days in Los Angeles every week. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies that secure Government contracts through competitive bid and a minimum of $1.6 million annually in Foundation and Corporate proposals, in support of JVS SoCal programs. This position manages the Grants team, oversees its activities, and writes proposals and reports in furtherance of the department’s deliverables. Activities include conducting research, data collection, and writing grant proposals and supporting material, and completing quarterly and incidental reports to funders. The Director may be required to make presentations to the JVS SoCal Board of Directors and relevant committees regarding funds raised and funding projections.

This position works closely with the Finance and Philanthropy Departments to develop and monitor yearly revenue projections that align with JVS SoCal’s strategic vision. The Director oversees research activities to identify and cultivate government, foundation, and corporate funders that align with overall agency long-range strategic goals. The Director works closely with multiple program managers to develop service models and appropriate collaborations to be pursued through mission-aligned grants.

The Director also helps track federal, state, and local government policy trends and developments relating to funding for employment, training, and education.

This role qualifies for a hybrid schedule (3 days in the office, 2 days remotely).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Works with the Finance team to develop proposal budgets.

• Attends bidders’ meetings and evaluates funding announcements for alignment and fit.

• Builds upon existing relationships and forges new relationships with foundation and corporate funders, is the primary contact with government program officers, and ensures information related to the application or award stage is communicated internally in a clear and timely fashion.

• Develops and prioritizes projects and proposals.

• Leads and conducts grants management and contract compliance activities including completing funder reporting on assigned timelines.

• Ensures program implementation and deliverables are aligned with grant agreements and program guides.

• Works with program teams to identify projects and programs that require support.

• Leads bi-monthly meetings to evaluate projects and programs and set funding priorities.

• Arranges and manages funder site visits.

Requirements:

• BA and/or MA in Public Policy, Education, Communications, Political Science, Non-Profit Management, or a related discipline.

• Previous success managing a grants team or previous success managing direct service programs and fundraising roles.

• Minimum of seven years of demonstrated experience in government and/or foundation grant research and writing in employment, training, social services, or educational arenas.

• Knowledge of private and public fundraising information sources.

• Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.

• Must understand cost allocation plans.

• Proven track record of successfully securing government contracts totaling at least $1 million as the lead writer and securing at least $750,000 from foundation and corporate funders.

• Highly skilled and detail-oriented in preparing proposals/contracts for federal, state, and local government agencies.

• Possesses excellent budget development and monitoring skills.

• Excellent planning, time management skills, and must be a team player.

• Strong conceptual, organizational and computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Blackbaud Raisers Edge, and the internet, as well as ability to develop spreadsheets, graphs and flow charts highlighting critical data.

• Comfort in developing working relationships and collaborating with internal and external partners.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Must possess strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.

• Experience developing programs to serve high barrier participants is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to visually inspect work. Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required.
