Nurse:Patient Ratios 1:4-6
Required Certifications (i.e., BLS, ACLS?) BLS, ACLS
Common diagnoses/Types of patients Bradycardia, A-fib, SVT, CHF, CAD, NSTEMI, PVD, PE,
CVA/TIA, post-operative VATS, post-operative lobectomy,
post-operative wedge resection, chest tubes, tracheotomy
(no vents), TAVR, post-op day 1 CABG patients (admitted to ICU post-op then come to CVSD next day)
Experience or 'Must have' skills Epicardial pacing, chest tubes
Are RNs required to titrate drips? Yes, titrate per ordered parameters
Common titratable &/or set rate drips Cardizem, amiodarone, procainamide, dopamine,
dobutamine, heparin, insulin (rarely)
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment? Charge nurse takes full patient assignment.

Are there nurse aids on this unit/Ratios Yes, 1:15
Hospitalist or Intensivist in house Both
RT in ICU 24/7 RT available hospital-wide 24/7
RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc) No vents, No continuous BiPap, Cpap, Airvo
Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors? Monitor techs are not on the unit, but there are
monitors in the nurses’ station and in some rooms. RNs are not required to
read their own strips. All interpretation and documentation
is completed by the tech. Monitors are Nihon Koden.
Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?) Position is night shift only or rotating day and night.
6:45 – 7:15. Unit does self-scheduling via a scheduling
committee. Blocked scheduling is open for discussion.
Weekend Requirements Averages to every other weekend.
Holiday Requirements Travel RNs will be added to the holiday rotation along
with permanent staff
Is there a call or standby requirement? No
Floating Requirements Float first
Scrub Color/Dress Code Navy Blue, no artificial nails
Unit/Department specific orientation 12-hour shift with a preceptor.
