Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and is looking for a part-time Clinical Research System Dynamics Consultant. The System Dynamics Consultant position is part of Team Participatory System Dynamics (PSD), which is working to change the way health care quality improvement decisions are made across all layers of the largest integrated health care system in the United States - the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

This position will consult on building capacities for system dynamics modeling simulation analyses among health care professionals and ways to facilitate data-based decision-making among diverse VHA stakeholders. Based on consultation with the Principal Investigator, Co-investigators and the Simulation and Modeling workflow, the System Dynamics Consultant II will consult on system dynamics modeling specific aims across the nationally distributed, cross-functional, multidisciplinary team.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LAB ASSISTANT

System Dynamics Consultation:

  • Update the existing Medication Management DSS Vensim System Dynamics module hosted on Forio Epicenter to reflect current U.S. policies;
  • Review application of the Modeling to Learn suite of Vensim DSS/Forio Epicenter simulation models across a variety of healthcare organizations;
  • Co-develop and conduct generalizability and sensitivity analyses for simulation modeling inputs and outputs in support of cluster randomized trial (CRT) specific aims.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

  • Consult to develop goals and timelines with the Principal Investigator and the simulation and modeling workflow;
  • Consult on the development of system dynamics model management and documentation protocols to ensure high-quality, transparent and reproducible models for use by a variety of scientific colleagues and VHA stakeholders, including the public;
  • Conduct modeling analyses and provide recommendations based on simulations run by sites in two large national trials

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Ph.D. in System Dynamics;
  • Experience consulting or operating at a high level to advise in a similar capacity with a nationally distributed team.
  • 5 or more years system dynamics programming experience;
  • Preferred: 2-3 years of experience in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, psychometrics, econometrics or related area. Background in health services research, public health or health economics with graduate-level training in research methods and statistics;
  • Experience completing simulation modeling analysis for peer-reviewed manuscripts and federal grant applications;
  • Excellent SD programming skills; skill with other statistical software or programming languages is a strength, but is not required;
  • Record of developing or participating in successful, extramurally-funded research, or have the training, commensurate experience and interest in developing a successful research trajectory;
  • Effective collaborator and contributor to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal communication and written skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to complete projects;
  • Demonstrated willingness to both teach others and learn new techniques;
  • Prior experience managing/leading a data project;
  • Detail‐oriented, strong programming and quantitative skills.
