Overview:
The Design Associate plays a vital role in supporting architectural design, space planning, and project development for school facilities. This position involves conducting space assessments, preparing architectural documents, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes. The role requires proficiency in design software, attention to detail, and effective collaboration with team members to meet project goals and long-term planning needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Space Needs Assessment: Analyzes anticipated operational requirements to determine space needs, making recommendations for long-term planning and facility alterations to optimize function and layout.
- Restacking Plan Support: Assists in the administration of the restacking plan, including reviewing documents, responding to Requests for Clarifications, and preparing alteration drawings.
- Design and Development: Prepares architectural design options using CAD and 3D software for review and approval. Develops detailed scopes of work for alteration and planning projects.
- Document Creation: Produces architectural drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for building alterations and equipment installations that align with operational needs and department functions.
- Field Surveys and Research: Conducts field surveys, research, and analysis to support planning and design efforts, providing insightful data to inform project development.
- Permit Applications and Approvals: Prepares applications for various agency approvals, compiling comprehensive design packets and reports for executive staff review.
- Construction Documentation: Develops complex architectural drawings, including construction details for improvements, alterations, and additions to existing structures.
- Code Compliance: Conducts code analysis as required, ensuring project designs align with applicable building, safety, and accessibility codes.
- Additional Duties: Undertakes other responsibilities as assigned to support the Facilities Services Division’s strategic objectives.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
- 5+ years of professional experience in large commercial, public agency, or school facilities environments, utilizing AutoCAD and at least one 3D design software (e.g., SketchUp).
- Experience in architectural design, coordinating with drafting technicians, conducting field investigations, and reviewing vendor and contractor submissions.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited institution..
Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong knowledge of architectural materials and building characteristics.
- Familiarity with building codes specific to schools, commercial facilities, and governmental construction.
- Ability to interpret California Department of Education regulations, ADA guidelines, and building/safety/fire codes.
- Proficiency in space planning, architectural design options, and construction documentation.
- Understanding of design principles, aesthetic considerations, and materials specifications.
- Competence in AutoCAD, SketchUp, and other design software for architectural drafting and modeling.
