The School of Architecture + Art at Norwich University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Architecture, specializing in design and architectural theory, with the desired start of July 1, 2025.

We are a small, collegial faculty dedicated to forming "citizen architects", students with a passion and commitment to community, social justice, and the environment, and reinforcing the university's commitment to "service before self." We foster an ethos of climate responsibility and design as social action throughout the curriculum. To our BS in Architectural Studies (pre-professional) and Master of Architecture (professional) degree programs we have recently added a BS in Design Arts. Our students and faculty benefit from interdisciplinary opportunities within the College of Professional Schools, including the Design + Build Collaborative, which addresses the needs of Vermont communities through the design and construction of affordable housing, and the nationally recognized Center for Global Resilience and Security. Our place-based culture of experiential learning is rooted in rural Vermont and broadened by CityLAB:Berlin, a satellite campus of Norwich University in Berlin, Germany. The College also includes schools of business; cybersecurity and advanced computing; engineering; and nursing. Experiential learning is a foundation at Norwich and interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged and supported in both instruction and research.

Preferred candidates will have experience teaching design studios and lecture courses in architectural theory, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, resilience, and environmental responsibility as core principles in architectural practice. They will have demonstrated excellence in design and/or design scholarship and an interest in design education. Responsibilities include teaching design studios, advanced seminars, lecture courses in history/theory; advising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students; and university service. For tenure-track faculty, professional development including research or other creative endeavors is expected, and resources are available to support these endeavors. Faculty are expected to develop a research program toward publication and external presentations. Integrating research into teaching is a mainstay of the University. Internal resources for professional development are available.


Requirements:

The ideal candidate has primary expertise in architectural design rooted in the discourses of history, theory, or criticism with a focus on non-western subjects and/or sustainability and resiliency. They will also have a demonstrated ability to teach design in an allied field (e.g., industrial, furniture, graphic, multimedia) or design-build.

Minimum requirements include: a terminal degree in architecture or a related discipline; a demonstrated background in history, theory, or criticism; and a research/pedagogical agenda that confirms a holistic and interdisciplinary conception of architecture. Also required are strong communication skills; prior full- or part-time teaching experience as a primary instructor at the university level; a strong commitment to scholarship and mentoring; and a desire to play an active role in the day-to-day life and evolution of the school's program and design culture. Literacy and experience in design build and/or an interest in sustainability and resiliency are preferred. Candidates are expected to advise undergraduate students and serve on department, college, and university committees.
