Direct and manage the overall band, orchestra, choral or mariachi program for the assigned vertical team. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular music activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in Music, required

Valid PK-12 or 6-12 Texas teaching certificate in Music, required

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of primary music program; Ability to manage budget and personnel;

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing choir; Ability to implement policy and procedures;

Ability to interpret data; Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills; demonstrate knowledge of subjects assigned; exhibit general knowledge of curriculum and instruction; basic computer skills,  

 

Experience:

Three (3) years teaching and directing experience, required

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Program Planning

  1. Direct high school performing ensembles.
  2. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate.
  3. Provide for participation at co-curricular and extracurricular events, including concerts and UIL activities.
  4. Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  5. Attend all region, UIL and TMEA functions.
  6. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy, and fine arts procedures and requirements.
  7. Oversee booster clubs, and support booster club activities. (as needed)
  8. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  9. Recommend policies and practices to improve the overall assigned music program.
  10. Support and actively encourage student involvement in the assigned music program grades 6-12.
  11. Serve as the vertical team leader to assure curricular alignment within the vertical team.

Budget and Inventory

  1. Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
  2. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  3. Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  4. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
  5. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all department equipment.

Instruction

  1. Develop and implement plans for the high school and vertical team music program (where applicable) and all other instructional assignments and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  3. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  6. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  7. Be present and actively participate in all instructional assignments.

Student Management

  1. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  2. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  3. Maintain confidentiality.

Personnel Management

  1. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant director(s) if applicable.
  2. Monitor the performance of the middle school directors and assistant directors within the vertical team.
  3. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  4. Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor (evaluator) and Fine Arts Director.
